Just to say I've had one of these for about 7 or 8 months now and they are great 8)

Cost me about £430 last summer, well worth it.
  • To be honest I would rather get one of those Ipaq pocket PC's with Tomtom included (like the full kit including car mounting that BT had on offer around Xmas for £200 ish) it is the same tom tom software and satelite receiver but it costs around half the price, and when your not using your pocket PC for satelite navigation, you can use it for listening to MP3's and watching video's (in landscape format)

aswell as reading MS word .doc files PDF files and excel files

I have a Toshiba Pocket PC with TomTom and it is great.......however, if it wasn't for the price, I would love this dedicated hardware - I dont use my pocket PC for anything else.

    This looks sweet. :D
if i had known then what i know now
  • I did have a Dell PDA with the GPS receiver and s/w, but found it was a bit of a hassle every time starting up the application and getting it all hooked up in the car.

Now I have a TomTom Go and the hassle factor is zero, they are great devices. Especially for that price. Make sure you update the firmware and download the speed camera warning database on it.

Ice_coffee you will be lucky, hb got an ipaq 2210 with tomtom 2 on it and it is just about stable, he put version 3 on and totaly messed up, theres no way as he says you can use it for anything else while tom tom is on there everytime he put a different software/mp3 or anything on it it would play up, he just has tom tom 2 on it and it does what he wants.
  • You can get it slightly cheaper (£356) if you are flying from any of the airports where Dixons have an airside shop.

I must admit that I have been thinking of getting one of these. I'm currently using an iPAQ with TomTom 2 and a Fortuna GPSmart BlueTooth GPS receiver (having previously used a NavMan sleeve, and before that a Garmin StreetPilot), but the thought of a single box solution without wires trailling all over the car is rather attractive!

Hey gabby, they do Bluetooth recievers that use nokia phone batteries now (which are cheap and brilliant). They last AGES and obviously, are wire free - I'd have a look on ebay if I were you. ;)

Can you tell me which ones? I had a look but I can't find the one you are referring too.

Yes, but they still need to be recharged at some point, so you need a cable to do this. Anyway, the Fortuna GPSmart (as I'm sure you know) uses three AAA batteries (which can be rechargeable) so can be used cable free.

On a long trip I would currently have one cable providing power to the iPAQ, another powering the GPSmart, a third powering my iPod/iTrip, a fourth for the Valentine-1 radar/laser detector and possibly additional chargers for my XDA2, my wife's Nokia 6310i and/or my wife's laptop. Makes the cabin a bit untidy and it's a faff hiding it all away when we stop anywhere :-(

The DIXONS35 code expires on 16/01/05 I think.
