hi there,
We are moving soon and have been advised to get the meter reading when we move in. When do I have to call the company (EON), is it the day of moving? Also, the electricity is on a prepayment meter, I would like to change it to a billed meter, would this be free of charge and who should I contact to?
Thank you. Sorry I haven't got any knowledge of this.
Any advice is welcome.

Certainly contact EON as soon as you move in as you need to be sure that the meter isn't set to recover debt(the previous occupant might have run up a debt)
You can also ask Eon if they will fit a credit meter. It will depend on your credit rating if they allow a new occupant to have credit; it might help if you offered a returnable deposit.
Some companies charge for changing the meter; others don't.0 -
Hi james007ago,
Cardew is spot on here.
As the electricity is on prepayment, we will need to issue you with a new device so you can top up the meter. The new device will relate to your personal electricity account.
If you were to use the old device, your payments may go to the previous tenants account and you may also pay towards any debt set on the meter previously.
The new device will reset this meter so you only pay for what you use.
Replacing the meter isn't straight forward i'm afraid, there is a cost of £50 for the meter exchange and as Cardew mentions, a credit check will probably be carried out.
Will you be owning the new property or are you renting? The exchange is more likely if you own the property.

Check out other suppliers before agreeing to a £50 charge to change the meter.
Not all suppliers charge to change the meter.
(Don't confuse this with a request for a 12 month refundable security deposit that may sometimes be asked for)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
