Gimp--weird tip to speed up loading

I have Gimp installed, its a freeware photoshop type of program and very powerful, but it always takes ages to load, when the fonts load it takes ages

anyway, someone told me to install "Pidgin" the chat program thingy to speed it up
I thought this very strange but being game for a laugh I gave it a try and it works! Gimp loads super fast now

Does anyone know why this would be?

I just thought I would post this in case it helps someone

heres Gimp http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ (I know! surely they could have thought of another name lol)

heres a link to pidgin http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Chat/Instant-Messaging/Pidgin.shtml

Because they both use a framework not native to Windows?

thats very interesting, thank you, i noticed on that link to WIKI that a number of other applications used the same framework, do you think any of them would have the same effect as pidgin?

it does work, i was shocked as i couldnt see any reason, so thanks again for putting my mind at rest

As surfer blue says, by loading up Pidgen (or others) you are essentially pre loading the framework that GIMP uses. If you pre load any of the applications that use that framework it will boost the load speeds.
  • ...do you think any of them would have the same effect as pidgin?
I have no idea. I imagine this works because Pidgin is usually left running in the background, effectively pre-loading the necessary components.
  • Thank you, that has thrown some light on it, but Pidgin doesnt appear to be running , I have looked using "auto runs" by sysinternals that supposedly shows everything running and cant see pidgin running, actually i doubt i will even use pidgin, but it does spee dthe loading of Gimp up by an amazing amount

it must preload something that i am not seeing, i am just puzzled by it, but not as puzzled now, thanks
