Barclays cancelling savings account for no reason?

I received a letter from Barclays today.. totally out of the blue!

I opened a savings account with them 2 weeks ago, received my sort code and account number from them but have never heard anything else.

The letter says:

BARCLAYS BANK PLC
PO BOX 7551
CHELMSFORD
ESSEX
CM2 6WH

TEL: 0845 050 4585

Dear Mr Orr

About your account

Unfortunately, we now need to give you formal notice that, 14 days from today's date, at the close of business on 19/02/2010 - your account with us will be closed and our contract with you ended.

It is therefore important that you withdraw any outstanding credit balance from the account before closure date, and make alternative arrangements for your banking straightaway

taway.

You should note that after your account has been closed, no further standing orders will be paid and any cheques or direct debits presented for payment will be dishonoured with the answer 'Account Closed'. You should also advise any third party that may make payments to your account of your alternative bank details. We will take resonable steps to return the sender any payments sent to you after your account has been closed, howevever, we cannot guarentee the return of such funds.

Please note that if we receive any request for a status report about you and your account, we will reply that we regret that we are unable to express an opinion'

What the HELL is this for? I got home at 6pm tonight so havent been able to call about it yet. Does anyone have an idea? And what does the last part about them being 'unable to express an opinion'?????
House Fund: £750.00

It sounds like the sort of letter they would send to a current account customer after the account has been conducted badly. Do you have a current account or any other accounts with them?

I have never had any current accounts or anything with them! This savings account was the first account I'd ever opened with them!

  • They sent me from the same address the very similar letter regarding 2 bank accounts. No explenations what's wrong, why, etc. Just an info I've got time until 08/04/2010 (less then 2 weeks)

Your post is quite old. What happened to you finally?
