Does the computer work all the time on the adapter? I mean, if you took the battery out, would it work fine or would it turn off after a while? This could help to establish if it is just the battery that needs replacement or if the power socket is loose.0

nope not all the time with the adapter it goes off charge, even when its plugged in0
-
we have never taken the battery out, so i wouldnt knw that? i didnt think it would work without the battery0
-
It will work if it is plugged in and the battery is removed.0

How often has the laptop been run on batteries alone, has it always been ran on AC power ?
There are a couple of things you can try....
Take out the battery, run it on AC power for a couple of minutes. Wait for the laptop to recognise no battery is plugged in and then physically connect the battery whilst it still switched on. This should trick the electronics into recognising the battery has been inserted and should start charging it (think of it like swapping dead batteries into a tv remote) works instantly again... that type of thing..
If that doesn't work, go into power options in control panel > advanced. There may be something which says calibrate. If it's not here you may be able to calibrate battery in BIOS
I'd also try cleaning the electrical contacts on the battery if they're grimy or dirty they may not be charging properlyOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

It really is worth trying it without the battery too - it is possible that the fault lies with the battery (and this may be why it stops charging sometimes). This doesn't necessarily mean that there is any fault with the adapter or power socket.0

ok i will try now without the battery, its just so strange,0

You may need a little help from someone with a multimeter, this on / off behaviour is usually associated with [ female [ plug you stick into the puter, or the [ male ] hole in the puter you plug it into.
Unless it's used on a desk, it's amazing the amount of stress put on that one tiny part over time while it's on the arm of the chair, lap, etc.
Quick 'n dirty way of testing is to meter the ' wall wart ' if it's constant and within spec it's the connection to the puter or a ' flex break '
Hope this helpsDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
