Which Scanner should I BUY?

Hi,
I want to buy a scanner to archive family photos, including from negatives, and scan old school books etc. I had an epson before, and this was fine but broke a year or so ago. I'm looking to buy another, but want to invest in a good one, and not buy one for ~10yrs. I have about £200 to spend. Have narrowed down my options to the following (in no particular order):
1. Canon CanoScan 8800F
2. Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner
3. HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner

Which should I buy ? Or is there another option I've not considered. After a while of looking at specifications, it's all a bit of a blur. Advice welcomed.

The key bit in all that is the scanning of negatives.
Most of the new scanners (including 3 in 1 s) will do the ordinary stuff with ease.

The negative scanner question crops up every so often on the Techie board.
Do a search and you should find similar threads from the recent past.

Thank you. I suppose the key bit is which do I choose given they all do pretty much the same job. I wondered if an expert might know. Imagine the world if things needed to be written only once!

Ive tried scanning negatives using my cannon scanner but it didnt work out, not sure if printers costing more would work
  • The Canon Canonscan 8800F is a Which? good buy --- if that helps!
  • Sorry, that should be 'best buy'.
  • I would also recommend the Canon. I bought a Canoscan Lide 600f for about £25 from the Canon outlet shop on Ebay just over a year ago (retail price at the time, over £100). It is a refurbished model but comes with a full 12 months factory backed warranty. Same as the full priced model. It has given me great service and has loads of extras to help you enhance the finished photograph, plus it's not so complicated that you need a degree to work it. I buy all my Canon kit from this source as you can't beat the price & Canon has a reputation for quality which is hard to beat. Sometimes you have to wait for what you want to become available but as long as you're not in a hurry it's perfect for serious "Moneysavers". Now that I've let my secret out, I hope I don't lose out in a future auction!!
