Technically, that's not theft; theft is the intention to deprive the owner of their property permanently, e.g. just driving off without making any attempt to pay. I think... not a lawyer

The customer has seen the signs indicating Visa is accepted, put the petrol in the car, goes to pay (will probably be on CCTV) and then finds that their planned method of payment is temporarily unacceptable and doesn't have the cash or their cheque book on them.

Just wondering what happens in this instance, as I've had it happen to me a few times over the years, but the paper based fallback has been used.

Number plate, driving licence or other ID to confirm name/address requested and invoiced I would guess?

The co-op cards visa debit were not accepted at Tesco when I opened my account back in dec09, I think they had changed from electron shortly before I got my account but now they work ok now!

I once filled up and the card payment machine and cash machines were not working and I had to fill in a form and pay within 2 days (It was a credit agrement ). The next time it hapened I told them I would leave my name, phone number and address or they could syphon their petrol back out and leave mine as them not making sure they could accept a payment they advertised was not my problem, they accepted that.

At no point did they mention theft or the police as they probably realised that they were in the wrong.

I always wonder about the [EMAIL="pay@pump"]pay@pump[/EMAIL]... when you swipe your card it says, fuel up to £99... I know at times I have had a few quid left in the account so I could potentially "steal" £80 or so?

I dont have any form of overdraft as its just a basic cashminder account so what would happen, does anyone know?

Your bank would pay it and then screw you for charges.

Santander inform me that they no longer issue unembossed visa debit card.

Thanks for your email. As advised, we do not issue unembossed cards anymore.
If you are concerned you have previously received a card with no embossing on it and you would like it reissued, please let us know and we would be happy to arrange this for you.

So i asked them to replace my unembossed one. The new one has been ordered. I'm fully expecting it to be unembossed when it arrives but I will let you know what happens.

Works at Tesco, as soon as the card goes in it tells me i can fill £99

(which is a good £60 more than my car can take, and would make a bloody mess!)

They sent an unembossed one, will be in on Thursday to close the whole lot. Waste of space.
