you only have one windows installation, so go into recovery console and uninstall the patch, if that doesn't work report back!!

Thank you sooo much, i didnt realise that it could only be a 1 but anyways have done it all now and computer is up and running and son is going on there now to back up his work.

I'm glad it worked out. Just in case you are interested, another convenient way of backing things up is through Microsoft's Skydrive. You can upload up to 25GB to a website and access it from anywhere - I personally find it more convenient than a USB drive. It's at http://skydrive.live.com and is free of charge.0

I have just read that this problem is actually caused by the interaction of the Microsoft patch with a rootkit (a virus) called Alureon.A, so please run an up to date checker as soon as possible! If your existing virus scanner is not picking it up, then please find another from the advice in one of the sticky threads on the forum.0
