It's Norton, which runs out in a couple of weeks time. We are currently looking at changing to Avast or MSE but with the laptop playing up, not keen to add anything new to it.:)
Can you please advise how I would disable it, and then presumably put it back on after I've tried malwarebytes again. Thanks (you've probably guessed I'm hopeless with computers:D)0 -
You just want to disable Norton not delete it, is there a Norton icon in your system tray?
If so try right clicking on it, there should be an option to disable/stop it or
go to start > control panel > security > Norton antivirus > select off0 -
Right-clicking the Norton icon only gives me these options:
In the lower-right corner of your Windows desktop, in the notification area, right-click the Norton 360 icon.
On the shortcut menu, select an available item. Depending on the current activities, your options include the following:
Open Norton 360 main window.
Fix Issues.
Check for Updates.
Run Backup Now.
Enable Firewall.
Enable Auto-Protect.0 -
Think I've found it.
Start/control panel/security/check this computer's security status/
Malware protection On Clicked drop down at side of this to get,
Virus protection
Norton 360 .............. On
(so presumably I just click the green light next to 'On' to disable it?)
Will do it tomorrow/today now. Thanks for your help so far:T0 -
Tried the above and clicking next to the green light but nothing happened.
However I WAS able to update malwarebytes and run a full scan. The log is as follows:

It looks okay to my untrained eye. Is there anything else I need to do/check before taking it in to the dreaded PC World tomorrow or Wednesday?
For instance ways of proving that certain hardware/software is working prior to PC World getting their hands on it. Or ANYTHING that I need to be aware of that you brilliant techie people know all about.:) Thanks0 -
Just bumping this, thanks0

Well, just been to PC World today (without the laptop) and been told that my son has to ring the Tech Guys as they don't repair/look at laptops instore anyway.
Typically it's an 0844 number, so am about to check 'saynoto0870' before deciding what to do.0 -

They can ring up and book it in via store. I suggest you ask them to (assuming it's cheaper for you to go back than to call)Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0
