PS3 YLOD but retailer now doesn't exist, help!

Hi long time reader and hadmany sucessea from here but first time poster. sorry if this has ready been answered did a quick search buy couldn't find anything directly relevant.

My 60gb ps3 ylod'd on me on Tuesday night it's about 30 months old and uptil then I had no problems with it. I phoned Sony and they want the usual £129 for a refurbished model. I said I'd think about it and hung up. Now I'm aware of the SoGA as I work in retail myself and have read on here and onwhat consumer blogs about peoples sucess stories of using the SoGA and getting their ps3s repaired FoC. Fantastic.

However my problem arises from the fact that I bought my ps3 from virgin megastores in August 2007 and with them no longer retailing I'm not sure where I stand. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what would be deemed a reasonable life for a PS3. You've had it for 2 and a half years which may be all that can be expected before something goes wrong. Is it completely dead or does it need repairing?

The usual course of redress would be through the seller (as I'm sure you're aware). This action just simply isn't available to you and I'm not sure how much joy you'll have with sony given the unit's age.

    How much are they new?

How did you pay for it?

If you used a credit card, or some other form of credit, you will be able to raise a claim against the credit provider as per S.75 of CCA '74.

I've just read the link you posted, OP. Doubt you'll get much out of sony. Looks like CCA 74 may be your only hope (but a slim one at that). If you paid cash or debit, I doubt you can do anything...

  • Paid on a debit card so guess I'm screwed. Took it in to local repair shop today. Much cheaper than a Sony refurb and I get to keep my save data console and trapped disc

YLOD can be fixed for 25 quid if your lucky. A quick zap in the solder oven and 90% of YLOD causes can be fixed. But be warned as YLOD is a generic warning of a fault and it could be one of many thousands of faults, but as said a solder oven often fixes it so its worth a try as thats all sony will do to yours when they replace it.

It all depends on how long the guarantee/warranty was for. Typically this is only 2 years. Section 75 is a double imdemnity and only honours the original guarantee or warranty.

No it doesn't. It gives the consumer the same rights as against the retailer i.e. SOGA.
