New Car Breakdown

I recently bought a new Ford Ka from a large, well known Ford Dealer, under the car scrappage scheme. It was purpose built to my spec and took a whopping 7 months to arrive (late January) but I wasn’t too bothered as my old Rover car was running fine (unusually!).

16 days later after I picked up my new and it has broken down… The AA came out under the Ford Assistance scheme and, after bashing it with a hammer and various other diagnostic tests (this was the first new model Ka he’d seen), the very very nice man concluded that it a fault with the petrol pump.

It’s now been with the dealer (not the original seller but part of the same chain) for 2 days but I haven’t heard anything from Ford or the dealer yet. I have a courtesy car (which is a problem in itself as I need various car permits for my work) but I was wondering what other rights I have? My main concerns are that this doesn’t bode well for the reliability of the car (as a former Rover owner I know all about this) and I don’t want this to have further devalued the car.

As the car is so new I want make sure I don’t lose the opportunity to act if problems arise later on.

You have to give them a chance to repair it. In all likelyhood it will be a one off. You need to do some reading up on rejecting the car but you are no where near that stage yet so just enjoy your courtesy car for a cpuple of days.

Try ringing up and asking for a progress report? If its a faulty part, that will probably take a day or two to arrive anyway.

My had KA had a couple of faults when I bought it brand new, which were fixed within a week, and over 4 years later it's never had a problem since, and sailed through it's MOTs.

Give them a chance to fix it; sometimes you do get a few teething problems on new cars, as it's not like they road test them for 100s of miles.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
