  • I had a little crafting/baking today :) I made a little heart cake for my Hubby for Valentines Day (see blog - sos don't know how to post pictures on a forum!) I saw a cake mould in Wilkos for 99p & just had to have it :D

    sarymclay - I too would love to know what kind of recipes everyone uses....any really good ones :D I use a simple one out of a baby/toddle food recipe book I've had for the last 6yrs & sometimes add bits to it :)
    :wave:Hi, I have a passion for crafting.......I'm always up to something :rotfl::rotfl:

    I am not a regular baker but at birthdays always do cupcakes instead of one big cake. Much easier I find with children as you don't have to bother with cutting slices. The recipe I find that works everytime and is really easy is the Nigella Lawson one.

    I tend to make cupcakes muffin size as the little fairy cake size ones go too quick! :rotfl: Plus you can get loads more topping on the bigger ones and even scoop out the middle first, fill with chocolate, lemon curd if youre making lemon cakes etc :) If you click on my username and then go to my homepage it will take you to my blog - ive loads of step by step recipes down the right hand side so you can see how they turn out - i would highly recommend the Frosting recipe - its a kind of marshmallowy topping for cupcakes :D:D

    That frosting recipe is great as no one in our family likes buttercream of any sorts or the cream cheese frosting either.

    Couple of questions, would it work adding colouring and glitter, ideally I need the frosting to be pink and sparkly. The other question is I note that the egg whites are not cooked, is it safe for children to eat raw egg whites?

    Thanks, I have now bookmarked your homepage as so many wonderful ideas.
  • Tired Mom - thanks for the recipe I will be giving that a try :D

    NEgirl - thanks for your advice & I love your blog - I'm already stalking you on there :D

    Yep just add a small amount of red food colouring and you can always sprinkle the top with the edible glitter - its what i plan to do once ive had our baby girl for her 'homecoming' party :rotfl:
    The raw eggs bit is fine too - i have 4 boys and im pregnant and its never done us any harm. I know it says youre not supposed to eat them etc but if we didnt eat everything they told us not too then im afraid we might starve!:rotfl: I think its just a matter of being careful, its not as if they are eating it by the bucketload - its a small amount on top of a cake so im sure as long as the eggs arent rotten then they would be fine :)

    Thanks ever so much for that I knew there had been something about eggs but like you say they do seem to want to starve us, perhaps it's their way of tackling obesity.

    Suddenly realised I had also forgotten to ask how long they keep for once the topping has been put on. Party is Saturday lunchtime and I also have to make a princess castle cake for family party so could do with doing the cupcakes in advance or is it really best done on the day.

    Really pleased your bump number five is a pink one. I did wonder if you knew, boys are special but there is something about having a daughter. Goodness she's going to be well protected by all those big brothers!

    Thanks for your advice

    LOL well she isnt going to bother bringing any boyfriends home put it that way! :rotfl:

    I would make up the cakes a couple of days in advance and then just whip up the topping the night before - i made ours the day before a party and they had nicely 'set' on the tops of the cake - i dont mean gone hard i just mean that they werent as gooey as they would be if made and eaten straight away (yet still gooey in the middles iykwim) :)

    Let me know how you get on :)
