Hey .
My cable clutch went driving hoem from work today. AA Took me to a nearby garage and said "by the way, just to note there's some grease around your CV joint under the front left wheel which is not meant to be there. I'm not saying it's going to cause something to fail but its dangerously close to the bearings and if one of them slips its disasterous" Or something along those lines.
Either way its cost me £130 for a new clutch cable to be fitted (pug 206 W reg)..
Is he havin me on with this grease thing? Should i get it looked at? I don't know what the cause is but would it be costly? He said "it might not be urgent, i can't say, but it definitely shouldn't be like that"
I'm awful with cars and have been ripped off before. Thanks

If you have grease appearing in the area where the cv joint is,it will most probably mean that the rubber gaiter that covers it,has split, depositing the contents around the wheel and lower suspension.
Having a leaking gaiter,is an mot failure, and to a degree he's right, because as you lose the grease, eventually the cv joint will fail, and break.(Just had a cv joint break under race conditions in my AX race car,and ended up with 1 wheel drive. Not pretty.)
The rubber gaiter is not an expensive part to buy,but fitting it if you've never done one before,is a nightmare. If you know what your doing, then it isn't so bad.(About an hour.)
Take a look at the back of the offending wheel, and see if the gaiter is split, and if it is,determine how big the split is,and then make your own mind up as to the urgency to replace it.
Post back when you've got sorted.
Hope this helps.

Well he said there was no obvious split but the grease is obviously coming from somewhere.
I'm not sure about cars (technically) myself.. If i get it looked at and they need to fix/replace things, what type of cost would I be looking out for a pug 206?
I'm a student whos just paid £400 for a service, and another £130 for this clutch lead... not going to be happy if its a lot

you can buy them that come in 2 halves. just cut the old one off, pack the new one with grease and use the straps supplied to put it on. its an easy job0

If there is no obvious signs of a leakage, take the wheel off, then clean up what you can see,and observe the offending area for a few days, and take it from there.

Im an 18 year old student. I aint risking taking off no wheels haha
Just want a simple answer from people that know :P Should i take it to a garage to be looked at?
Thanks[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Yes it's a MOT failure but i wouln't panic, its quite common, just part of wear and tear.
A c.v gatar costs around £10 plus a hours labour to fit.

Either fix it/assess it yourself or just leave it and wait to see if anything fails. You'll know if the joing is going to fail because they normally start rumbling when you turn corners about a month before they fail.Happy chappy0
