  • yep - that's the promise!! I was a pixie .... decades ago when you had to make the tie out of a huge triangle and fold it until it looked like a noraml tie ..... then they brought in the very easy yellow crossed over thingy that pinned together...

Wow, I'm on a retro vibe, I had the cross-over tie with the trefoil pin...but I still had the brown pinafore dress with the purse on the belt...and we always had to keep 6 things in it...a handkerchief, 10p for the phone, some string....and I've forgotten the rest :rotfl:
  • cross over thing was much easier than the silly tie that you HAD to do a reef knot at the back!!!! ... oh and I remember the trefoil badge. dresses were a bit sack like - found a piccy of one on line (with the old tie)

    Do I win a prize? :rotfl::beer:

Well done for remembering it but unfortunately it's changed now!

"I promise that I will do my best
    To love my God
To serve the Queen and my Country
    To help other people
And to keep the Brownie guide law."

I prefer the old one! It rhymed better!! :rotfl:

I'm sure part of my Brownie celebration involved walking through two lines of Brownies pretending to be trees and talking to myself in a bucket of water? Is this not around now then! :P

I loved Brownies, going to see about volunteering when I have a bit more time.
  • We had a mirror with a mushroom/toadstool thing... I think in the handbook there was a story about a girl who wished for a Brownie to come and help the family, and a wise owl told her to go and look into the pond... "so I looked into the pond and I saw... myself!"
WOW BROWNIES WAS ACE!! I was a Gnome (yuk worse one) and a Seconder.
I was an 80s Brownie. We had neck ties with a toggle. Good times!! Wonder where all my badges are now.
  • OH yes - I remember now after reading Katejayne's post

I am 32 now but I did the standing in the middle with a mirror (for a pond) and a fluffy toadstool and a fluffy owl and turning around 3 times and wishing for the help and seeing myself. And then doing the I promise that I will do my best and keep my duty to God, to serve the Queen and help other people and to keep the brownie guide law.....

I practised it for weeks beforehand!!!
  • My Brownies have quite an elaborate (well for 7 year olds anyway) promise ceremony (promise celebration seems to be the girlguiding UK lasted term!), we sing a special song, have the toadstool, the pool and some cuddle toy owls, and our new recruits make their promise and recite the law, and get all the bits and bobs such as six badge, promise badge etc. We practice it the week before and at the start of the promise meeting. We also have the parents in to take see the girls have their 'special' moment. I really like to make a big thing of it and make a fuss!!!

I don't know how your leader does things but I like all my brownies to have a sash as I hate pinning the promise badge in to their t-shirt as it can be a bit difficult and I terrified I'm going to stick the pin in them!!

    Evening,
We have been told that we need to pay £26 for my daughter to make her promise. Leader said that she would use money to go to shop and buy sash, books, etc. Am a bit wary! What do you all think?
    Thanks,
    Eva

even 30 years ago I was an aethiest antiroyalist and I hated the old one. Indoctrination etc.. don't have to believe in an imaginary friend to learn how to tie knots... and not surprisingly I was never a queens guide!
