Brittany Ferries - any way of getting them cheaper?

Hi all,

I need to book a ferry for 4 adults (possibly with a car) for the second week in september from portsmouth to st Malo and as I've found before Brittany ferrys seem to be the main ferry company and they aren't cheap... they work out at £4-500 for 4 passengers and not much difference with a car...

Anyone got any cheap way of getting tickets or discounts with brittany or a cheaper provider? Has to be portsmouth to st malo really as the drive from there is 2,5 hrs and anything further east (calais, caen, ect... is alot more driving)

Thanks

Simon

  • Thanks, condor is not much different at £408 (4 adults and car with reclining seat) :-(As for caravan club. Can somebody see how much it would be for me as I'm not a member...I'm after Portsmouth to st. Malo (return) for 4 adults, standard car with reclining seat outbound and nothing on return (as there are none available). Outbound on the 9th Sept and return on the 16th...If the discount is good (the caravan site doesn't cleary show what this is) then I will join the cc club...ThanksSimon

    Hi Simon,

I'm in France at the moment, Normandy. I came over on the Portsmouth - Caen ferry 10 days ago. Last year we came over Poole - St Malo and the year before Portsmouth - Le Havre. I would say that the main ferry operators change their offers quite regularly. Since it's quite a while away till you go I would wait and see the prices after mid August. Unfortunately Brittany Ferries have just changed their offers and have not included the St Malo route.

I know what you mean about the drive, I have to drive from Scotland to Portsmouth so always try to minimise the French end. You say you have a 2 1/2 hr drive from St Malo, Are you heading West or South West of St Malo? Just a thought but if you are going South or East then sailing to Caen is probably only a maximum of ~50 minutes drive extra.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for any deals to St Malo, either way I hope you get sorted and have a good trip

Kellm9 Have you thought of Rosyth/Zeebrugge? I drive from Scotland to Spain and I always found the drive through England to be very busy with traffic and therefore very tiring. The traffic in France is not nearly as bad and the drive is more relaxing.

We're going to Nr. Vannes on the West cost so Caen is further and there is also the possibility that we might be taking a boat/jetski (more cost on the ferry) so travel time to a minimum is needed... I'll see about waiting but there are 11 of us wishing to go over a 2 week period and we have accomodation booked so don't want to end up having to swim there!!! :-)I'm still interested in the caravan club offer if anyone can try it for me?ThanksSimon

If any of you have a blue disabled badge then you can join the disabled drivers club and get a good discount.

    Hi brodev,

I have done the Rosyth ferry before (horrendous). I did look into it this time but the sailings did not suit + it costs a fortune. They only sail every two days or so now, used to be every day. I agree with you on the driving, France is a doddle compared to England. However I'm not sure if the England driving is any worse than the 17 hours on the Rosyth ferry. What I need is a fast craft ferry ~ 8hrs (wish) from Glasgow to West coast Spain.

    Cheers

We often travel in France always go Dover Calais as the cost of the other routes is too much.

Last year car caravan return £129 if you wanted to go now think it is about£150 dover Calais

The travel down is about 3-4 hrs ( To Caen Laharve) I don't think I would pay the extra for st Malo. Very long crossing you would do it faster from caen etc and travel by road.

From cherbourg down to St malo about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs.

Of cousre that side of France most of the motorway is free good roads used to bottle up but new motorways have helped that.

And the fuel is cheaper ( Diesel)
