Thanks for all the replies - sorry I haven't got back sooner.
I am a single parent with 2 children so the eves/weekends time is out - I will be able to work during the school day or not at all.
I think I will just work on Wed pm, as that seems to be a stardard time off, and then see how it goes.
When I went to the interview I was told the time in lectures and seminars would only be about 3 full days per week, hope it doesn't turn out to be 'proper full-time'!

In my first year, I had flexible hours at ASDA (I don't recommend this supermarket since 'flexible' hours transpired to be rather inflexible), and perhaps supermarket/temp work might be something you could do.

I did somewhere between 12-18 hours a week and it did not screw up my schedule too much. It did mean that I could not socialise as much as I would like since the remaining free time needed to be spent studying.

For some of us who are not funded by parents / research councils etc, working is a necessity. I'm fortunate in that I claim housing benefit and incapacity benefit (putting me in a better financial situation than if I were able to find a suitable part time job as I am disabled). Nowadays, I can only earn 20 pounds a week (otherwise it all needs to be declared and benefit will be affected), but that 80 pounds extra a month is going to come in handy for food/bills.

Goodness knows how people get by WITHOUT doing some work during their time at university.

How would a uni ever implement rules on working??? Do see how they could police it.

I'm doing a full time BA hons English Lit degree, I'm a single parent and work 16 hours a week as a PA....I've just got my first year results and got a high 2:1, so it hasn't affected my studies!

If the school is willing to be flexible I don't see the problem. Lecture timetables should be out soon, make sure you sign up to the most convenient seminars on the first day. I did this last year and was able to work 3 days- My lectures were a Monday and Thursday, so I signed up to my seminars on Mon/Thur too.

outofdate - I can't speak for other uni's, but on the first day of the new academic year we have to go and sign up to seminars. There are probably 2 a day and you just add your name to which group you want to attend- the lectures are already set in stone though.

Different uni's are obviously different, but our course is so intense we don't even get wed pm off.

nikkif - are you doing a 3 year BEd or a PGCE?
When I went to the open day I was told that the uni time would be about 3 days per week. If it is 5 full days I had better plan some more child care rather than worry about working!
  • i currently work 8pm-11.30pm every weeknight, i start uni in sept so ill have to see how it goes! lol

im doing a BA (hons) same as the BEd, its 3 years, we do one day a week placement and then been told not to plan anything else 9-5 the other days. Different uni's will probably be different though.
