Whatever the old Tiscali service is now called.....I just wondered if anyone else can help with this as numerous calls/emails to the helpline are being ignored or I get stupid replies!!!
My mum was on a tiscali phone/broadband package. Since the package has been taken over by talktalk she has not been able to get her internet working. The "specialist" helpline staff have told her that her laptop is faulty and it needs looking at and she needs to take the laptop back to the shop. However I brought it back to my house and it can pick up my virgin, my neighbours sky and another neighbours BT wireless - so therefore it cannot be the laptop! They have tried to manually put in the settings for their tiscali/talktalk settings but they do not work. Have requested a set up disc - but am informed that you cannot have a set up disc as you have to have one from the person who supplied the wireless box in the first place (TISCALI!!!) and they will not reissue a new box!
Upon deciding after 3 months now of this kind of rubbish to change to a different provider my mum has rung the Post Office to be told that the Car Phone Warehouse (talk talk company) locks the phonelines and if you leave you have to then buy ANOTHER new phone line from BT - even though tiscali/talk talk/car phone never put this phone line in to begin with and my mum bought this line from BT and has just changed. She has never had any correspondence telling her her line is locked and she cannot change providers so can anyone help me and tell me if this is the case and if this is allowed? Shes getting very distressed.
Many thanks
Lisa

Welcome to the (ever-expanding) world of Talk Talk!Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Is it Windows Vista by any chance? Have had two occasions in the last two weeks where Vista refused to connect to a known wireless connection and no amount of re-entering the passkey again and again would get it to connect. On one I gave in on the other the person upgraded to Windows 7 and the laptop connected straight away to the router without being given the key again. It had it obviously remembered from its previous Vista incarnation.0 -

Hi Lisa
I believe BT are currently offering free connection (usually £125). Well worth it to get your mums line back to a BT line. don't take their broadband though; it's awful. Shop around for another broadband provider, some on here have very good reviews.
