Why pricing of Ferry tickets are so odd?

Cheap day return say £20-£30
Yet single crossing cost can be double that without any return just the one way.
Is it time Martin had a look into this scam?
any ideas?
Thanks

I don’t use ferries, but I do remember this being on the TV. As I recall, the answer comes down to the two different types of customer who buy the two different types of ticket. The user of the cheap day return is a tourist or a booze-cruiser. I think the day returns are cheapest on the less busy days, just like with cheap flights. The ferry operator wants to encourage this type of person to use their service, and to use it at the less busy times. The person who buys the one-way ticket probably doesn’t need encouraging, and probably doesn’t have any flexibility on when they travel.古池や蛙飛込む水の音0
