2 DD for same payment :should I cancel one?

I have received a letter from my council telling me that they had recently changed their Originator Identification Number (OIN) for my council tax Direct Debit instructions, as this will enable them to process paperless Direct Debit instructions over the phone.
They did ask me NOT to cancel my current Direct Debit Instruction, and if I had done so to contact them to set up the instruction again.
I have checked my bank account today, and now it seems that I have two Direct Debits at the same name with the same reference number, but they have different DD number and one is set to start in 2000 (that was the original Direct Debit) while the other is set to start on 30/12/2009.(I suppose this new one supposed to contain the change mentioned in the letter).
Surely if they have done another Direct Debit for my council tax, the original DD should have been cancelled, or I will pay twice my council tax when payments start again?
Why would be the reason for asking me not to cancel the first one?
Should I cancel the original Direct Debit anyway now that I have a new DD for the council tax payments?

The DD doesn't have to be cancelled they just may not take any payments from it. SO technically it will just be an inactive.
You can cancel it anyway, see what happens.0 -

Why would that be? They will only request a payment via the new Mandate they've set up.
Wait until payments start again (if you have Feb / March free) ....... then delete the old one if it's still there. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Thanks, I will leave them then and see what happens.
I had problems in the past with standing orders not cancelled where I paid twice, and I suppose I thought Direct Debits were working the same way and you had to cancel the previous one or you were paying twice.
I'm glad I did ask the question before doing anything0
