Is my passport still valid?

My passport is up for renewal next year and in the time I've had it I've only used it twice!
Because it's been stored away and been moved in my various changes of addresses, some of the image on the front of the passport has rubbed off. I remember when I made the application there was something about being able to see the image to keep it legal, but I can't find this information now.
Can anyone clarify this for me?
Cheers

That won't be a problem. The gilt colouring on the front cover rubs off on lots of passports. The clear image probably refers to the page with your photograph on. That has to be clearly recognisable.0

Agreed, if the OP means the gilt embossing, mine has none left at all, no problems at all.
Baggage receipts seem to have removed mine over the years.0 -
Thanks Apt and Inactive.... think I'm going to definitely use it to go somewhere before it runs out

My last passport had the gold on the cover rubbed off, had blood stains from one of the times I was mugged, and basically looked like it had been run over by a herd of buffalos. But it still didn't get refused anywhere! (I'm keeping my current one in much better condition!)0
