Should I switch from Electricity KEY Meter

Options
I have just moved into a new flat and the electricity is done on a key meter. My landlord is not happy about me switching this over to a credit meter but british gas told me it was our decision as there is nothing in the contract about not being able to change it.

Would this actually save me money? We already have our gas with british gas, would switching the meter to a credit meter make any difference as it is already registered with british gas.

Thanks!

How does BG know what is in the contract? Have you provided a copy to BG?

Remember, you have an obligation to hand back the property at the end of the tenancy in the same condition as it was originally let (fair wear & tear excepted) and if you don't the LL could charge you the applicable costs to make it so.

Best to keep the LL sweet rather than start off your tenancy going directly against your LL's wishes. Discuss the matter with him, find out why he would object to changing the meter, in worst case scenario offer to have the meter changed back before the end of the tenancy.

A PPM usually costs no more (and in some instances less) than the similar standard tariff paid quarterly on receipt of bill from the supplier.

However, a credit meter may allow discounts not associated with a PPM such as discounts for agreeing to pay monthly by DD.

There may be a cost asscociated with installing the credit meter, and I would expect the supplier will want a hefty security deposit unless you pass their credit check with flying colours (student, new address,...unlikely ;))

The landlord has no say in what meter you have, it's not his property.
