British Gas signing me up to new contract

  • They did this to me as well, definitely no email giving me the chance to opt out. I only noticed when I switched suppliers last week and they applied the cancellation fee to both fuels - I called and asked for a refund as I had not been given the the option to opt out, they refunded with no hassle - I was a little surprised it was so easy, given I was a lost customer already.

The number of tariffs available for fuel should be simplified. End of.

I gues it is getting like the Mobile Phone Market now where contracts are becoming as long as 36 months.

Also BG have now included a range of Cancellation fees in the new Terms and Conditions for the Home Care Agreement.
  • Mikki, I use Ebico for my Gas and found them to be reasonably priced. Have asked them to take over my Electric suply from BG too. The service centre staff are UK based and seem to know what they are doing and are helpful.

To be honest I think the line I have seen is the cheaper a product you buy the worse the "after sales" part is. You get what you pay for in life I guess, even with utilities.

I rang British Gas to cancel them and I don't know where I got through to but from the guy's inability top speak English I am guessing it was miles away from here.

And I'm guessing from the incomprehensible e-mail replies I got, that completely failed to answer the questions I asked, came from outwith the UK as well, until finally I got a "sensible" reply from presumably someone higher up. Definitely not good customer service!
  • Apparently they are UK Based.

But British Gas claim to be the cheapest price around and like I say - pay peanuts get monkeys. I found that with my broadband. I pay more than average now with a smaller provider but get the beauty of guaranteed reponse issue times and a normal "landline" number to ring and none of the press 1, 5, 7, and STAR!!! That said I have so far not had a problem.
  • Hi I have tried to change my supplier BG to Southern Electric after one of their reps came knocking on our door before christmas. He told us there would be a charge of £30 but this would be canceled out by them giving us £30 to join them. It turned out that British gas wanted £70 for the gas and £30 for the electric to change as we were on a fixed tarriff till 2011. So I told them we would not change but before the message got through to Southern it had been setup. After a lot of tooing and frowing we have had to stay with BG and they have wavered the charges and put us onto the new lower credit.:j

I too was only made aware of my transfer to another fixed rate tariff when I read an e-mail from BG saying it had reduced my rate.

I did not read the original e-mail they sent to me when they advised me that they were opting me in to another fixed rate tariff.

I have today used that original e-mail to contact them and I have requested that they remove me from the new fixed rate and waive any fees.

I'll let you know how I get on.
