    Wordpress is probably the best all around blogging platform. However, if you want to try something a little different, or want to create a website rather than a blog type of site, Weebly can do both and is very visual, drag and drop type of interface so easy for newbies:

    http://www.weebly.com/

    @ahll,

    From what you have said, it does not sound like you have wordpress installed, that 'save and share' on wordpress link sounds like a bookmarking link, i.e. 'share this page on facebook/wordpress/digg' type of action.

    If you don't know about Cpanel or ftp, then I think you will struggle to get a wordpress installation on your existing site. You can either host your blog with Wordpress itself, or you can maybe ask your hosting company to install Wordpress for you. If you know the username/password and server login information for your website, then I could assist you with the Wordpress installation if you like, just drop me a message.

    This looks good - but I am confused with the 'registering your domain' bit - doesn't that cost? I mean I hear about people buying addresses. Does WordPress charge for that too.

    These are probably stupid questions. Sorry but it's scary.

    Also, I heard WordPress is good for helping to stop spam and stuff - is Weebly as good?

    You look very clever and techie headed - what would you use?

    I keep putting off doing this ... scaredy cat - that's me.

    What about google as suggested above - anybody got one of those?

    When you register with Weebly or Wordpress (registration is free) you are asked to choose a username which also acts as your site name. For example, if you register as MerlinWidgets, then you are provided with a free sub-domain in this format:

    http://merlinwidgets.weebly.com

    http://merlinwidgets.wordpress.com

    However, lets say I wanted a more professional looking domain name and just wanted it simply as:

    http://www.merlinwidgets.com

    Then in that case you would need to register a domain, which costs about $10 / year (I don't know how much Weebly etc charge but that's probably how they make a profit).

    Regarding spam, this only applies in the sense that you have a comment system enabled on your site or blog, and Wordpress does have an extensive number of (free) add-on plugins which provide a great deal of functionality to enhance your site and also control the comment spam.

    Personally in this scenario I would use Wordpress, because it has a lot of community support and extended functionality through the plugins, and you will find that it is very easy to find plenty of ready made site 'themes' which you can install through a few simple clicks to make your page design reflect your personal tastes. I just mention Weebly because most people already know about Wordpress, and Weebly is just a decent alternative and is probably more suited to someone less technically inclined, i.e. I would recommend it to kids as a good starting point, but for a site that you intend to maintain and may wish to grow, then the greatest potential will be with a platform like Wordpress.
