Squirrels stealing bird food

Thanks everyone, got some good ideas there. The air rifle has been tried before (in my brother's youth) and despite his success, I think other squirrels just moved in instead. Plus my aim is rubbish and I'm not keen on the idea now with two small children. They were upset enough when we had to give away the friendly young peacock that turned up in the garden and refused to leave!
And yes, rats are a worry. Haven't seen any around the garden for a fair while mind you. The pesky mice are more of a problem as they get in the house and make nests in my cupboards
Unfortunately I can't really see anywhere in the garden to hang food that a squirrel won't be able to reach - either a nearby outhouse roof, a fence or a tree.
I think I may try a DIY upturned feeder thing suggested here, and/or save up for a squirrel-proof feeder. Will leave some nuts out for the squirrels too (not whole ones in spring though).
You've all been very helpful - many thanks!0 -
We hang our fat balls out on a metal hook & simply use margarine to grease the pole. We've had loads of fun watching the little blighter's slide down it like firemen :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker0
