On the regular saver, do you have to pay the same monthly amount each month or can you vary the standing order (between 20 & 250)?

    Just phoned Abbey (0800 30 20 30):

A £1000 investment in the 2 Year Special Growth Bond qualifies you for the 8% regular saver.

The 8% regular saver precludes you from the 7% regular saver.

Applications can be done by post, no branch visit required.
Well Abbey have just told me that the 8% option is only available in branch - I was sent a 7% (Issue 4) application in the post, you see. That makes sense with the references to 'Issue 4'(7%) and 'Issue 5'(8%) above. I suppose it isn't necessary to open the qualifying product (SG Bond etc) 'in branch' but it does imply that the FRMS at least must be done there. A shame if you can't get the 8% (not the end of the world!) this way but it is possible that by arguing that if you weren't told this by Abbey staff (on the phone) after asking about it's availabilty - as I was not - and that if you insert a caveat like: ''I wish to open these two accounts - one by paying in £1000, which I believe qualifies me to the other at an enhanced rate" with your postal application - then they might go easy and pay the higher rate. I suppose that you would have to ask them to change the account 'number' in some way (like A&L using different 'starting' digits for different issues of the same account at different rates) and they could - at a push - do this.

This is not true: I just received both the Special Growth Bond and 8% Regular Saver application forms in the post.

If you want any details or a copy of the accompanying letter, PM me.

The deadline for the 5.5% bond is 8th August or earlier if sold out.

I concur with what Dagobert has said above. I phoned Abbey yesterday to request an application pack for the Special Growth Bond and 8% Regular Saver and they are posting them to me. The Abbey advisor said that it is possible to open both via the post. To do so, complete both application forms, enclosing a cheque for the Special Growth Bond and a completed SO form for the 8% regular saver.

The standing order form says to complete it and 'hand it to your bank/building society'. - I hope they weren't wanting this back....

    Hi,

When the advisor told me how to apply for the accounts, I did think it was odd when she said that the SO form should be completed and returned along with the application forms. I thought I'd wait until I received the forms to check.

Whenever, I've opened regular savers in the past I have usually taken the SO form along to my bank myself. Although, I have more recently been setting up the SO's myself online, as I know it is definitely done then;).

The Abbey website now features the Abbey 7% monthly saver account (issue 4) details: http://www.abbey.com/index/future/savings_index/reward_index/reward_fixed_rate_monthly_saver_index.htm

    Hi All,

Completely amazed with Abbey (and Royal Mail) today, in a good way!

Phoned up yesterday around midday about the 8% regular and 5.5% bond, got through after about 1 min and the operater understood exactly what I was after!

The forms arrived in the post this morning at 9am!

Considering it says when you phone up that they are being overwhelmed with requests for its savings accounts, that is the fastest service I've ever had from a bank with posting letters out!

    Cheers

Hi I want to open one of these accounts but cant find the required documentation.I can supply a recent bank statement and a photocopy of my passport would this be sufficient? I was at my nearest branch yesterday however they informed me you need to book a appointment, this is of no use to me as I live over 100 miles from the branch.

They supply a list of suitable documents with the application form. You either have to send originals or certified copies. But don't worry: there's a big selection of possible documents including bank statements, council tax bill, IR notifications, etc.. If you can supply 2 of those you won't need a certified copy of your passport.
