Bristol areas - Stoke Gifford, Nailsea and Bedminster

I live in Bedminster and I think its a lovely area. Easy walking distance to City Centre (I walk in to work everyday, much quicker than driving) but also Bedminster has plenty of shopping areas and amenities so going in to the centre isn't always necessary. Some areas are of course nicer than others but its a nice part of Bristol :jAiming to be debt free AND a qualified lawyer by 30!

Thanks again.
so a bit more about ourselves. we are indeed a childless couple in our early 20s. my bf has already lived in bristol (Redland) for a few months and we've realised that those areas (Redland, Clifton etc) aren't really affordable to buy.
also i've had a good think about my circumstances and decided that it is a good time to buy, altho not to 'settle down and have a family' just yet... by the way i'm looking at houses that are up to 200k.
any more comments on stoke gifford? or any other nice areas around Parkway? thanks!0 -
Im Queensdown Gardens....how strange. Got a right little Brislington MSE gang going on.. ha! (sorry to steal your thread)0

I'd chose Bedminster out of those three, depending which part of Bedmisnter you live in you could walk to Temple Meads. Even if you lived at the far end and needed to catch a train, it would take literally minutes.
You could consider east Bristol, which is easy for access to the M32. I live in Eastville, which is not everyone's cup of tea, but you could look at Fishponds maybe (although no train, you would need to get the bus to town).0 -
Tiff - you'll have had my leaflet through a week ago or so then.
£200k gets you plenty of 3 bed Victorian terraces in Bedminster, a fair few 2 bed flats in mediocre centrally located new private developments or some big 3 bed 30s houses near where we live. In Nailsea you get some smaller 3 bed 50s houses or a tiny cottage (which pretty much describes the housing stock in Nailsea). Stoke Gifford doesn't seem to come up on my search but strangely, this: http://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/2302717?utm_source=homesco&utm_medium=feeds&utm_content=2302717&refer=homesco2302717 did. Seems good value - big but needs a lot of redecoration.
I used https://www.home.co.uk - better than rightmove since you can search using a map.I'm an ARB-registered RIBA-chartered architect. However, no advice given over the internet can be truly relied upon since the person giving the advice hasn't actually got enough information to give it with confidence. Go and pay someone!0 -

If you look at this it gives you a better idea of some of the areas http://www.cosmotourist.com/travel-blog/view/s/834/t/where-to-live-in-bristol/
I llve in Bristol near bedminster and grew up in bedminster and parents still live there just opposite Victoria Park Where i live now in Totterdown is great 10mins walk to the station, you have the bath rd and wells rd so easy access to the ring rd to get to north bristol and the motor way and very good bus routes you have a mixture of flat houses and some of the house are very deciving often being 3/4 storeys high but from the outside look like small two storeys
Other good areas nearby would be Perrats Park just off the wells Rd big victorian type villas and if you can get a house opposite the park you have an amazing view of the city Brislington is really nice as well and easy access to the train station and m32
Victoria Park Bedminster (opp) Hill ave & Nutgrove rd area the park is really nice area for city center lots of families and some students Windmill hill is another area nearby Southville and Coronation Rd areas mixture of flats and houses similar to totterdown but just as close to shops and train station
for most people in these areas then bedminster /ashton would be there main shopping areas with superstore of asdas and sainsburys
Bedminster Down area is South bristol just up from Bedminster to far to walk to the station really -(well it is for me) there is a station at Parson st but that bedminster area really You have a couple of fairly big housing estates nearby and for me it a bit to far out and not much in the way of local shops (its not really that bad - it just seams like that to me)
Its mainly a mixture of nice and not so nice private and ex council houses unless you get a house which is actually on the A38 Itself and these are pretty big and spacious mainly semi detached style
Ashton which is just below bedminster down and next to Southville and Bedminster would be a better choice its close to the portway for the motorway and city center
You have North st area which has been very up and coming over the recent years you can walk to the town from there as well its close to hotwells and the riverside and you can walk over the bridge to the riverside
basically any of these areas are good for city center ( walkable) and good for motorway via the portway (depending on the traffic) ( but they are supposed to be building the new football stadium in ashton near david lloyds so dont know what that will do to the area
Out the other side North Bristol you have Mangotsfield and Longwell Green Warmly and Winterbourne Bradley Stoke Little stoke ect
They are all close to the the ring road which means you have easy access to motorway These areas are a not really good for the city center unless you are close to parkway station and travel to bristol via train Stoke gifford would be the best probably for parkaway and motorway the bus could take 45 - 50 mins easily
Bradley stoke is famous for being known as sadly brokes in the 80;s recession is more mainly 1980s style houses ( think brookside) lots of roundabouts, all the streets, look the same, and very open plan style and you will get lost even with a sat nav. Stoke Gifford is similar more spread out but older style
Longwell green area - new modern private housing estate similar to Bradly stoke but i think personaly better facilities ie shops a few resturants pub and doctors ect - its a mixture of flats, houses ect very modern and easy to get lost in
Other areas nearby are warmly mangotsfield and kingswood and hanham
Winterbourne is more older bigger sort of houses similar to nailsea imo
Filton & Patchway is a mixture of council and private older housing estate close to aerospace and rolls royce and concorde but good access for th e motorway but dont buy here if you dont want to get involved with niby for the protest against a new runway /airport ect
Frenchy which is more of a village community parts of fishponds and eastville near eastville park is nice if you get the right part is nice
This side of the city gives easier access to the M4 and wales would be better for you oh - but def not public transport for the city center really unless you are using the train each day ie parkway to temple meads out of all of those areas fishponds is the closest for city center
Two areas that might be worth looking at
North Bristol Gloucester Rd - Bishopston area /St andrews areas - i always think that its a kind of a posher South Bristol imo - nice big houses, students and lots of character on the main rd and big community but walk 2 mins of the main rd and you get very nice wide streets with similar to redland but without the redland price tags Gloucester Road is a funky and very up-and-coming place of Bristol to live. It has really changed it's image as it used to be known as a grotty and slightly dangerous place to live, but Its very trendy now Gloucester Road is quite long and but you could be in the city center within 20 mins walk depending on what part and there are really good bus routes to the city center on this rd
but for your oh thens it straight up the gloucster rd to the m4 within 10mins or so
also close by is Cotham which is Redland little sister but some fab houses flats there
KEYNSHAM
if you dont want city center but want easy access to city center then http://www.keynsham.co.uk you can get the bath train from there to bristol temple mead every 30 mins (takes 5-10 mins) and its right on the ring rd for your oh to get to the motorway, Its also close to Bath as well as Bristol and it has small village /countryside feel Its kind of similar Nailsea but not as as rural and quiet and cut off . It was home to Cadburys Chocs until recenty. I think it has more of a community feel to it because its not a new build town.
Nailsea is the sort of place you either go to retire or bring up the kids:D and nothing is open after 8pm and its a hike to anything that is if you dont have a car - ok its not that bad but you know what i mean if i had to pick that side of the city then i would proabably pick Portishead its nice marina and a nice modern feel to it but a mixture of old and new and its not as souless as a lot of new places
Traffic in Bristol is terrible and always has been - expensive and totally crap and never on time
as you can probably tell im a real bristolian and know just about everywhere this comes from knocking off school when i was a kid and riding around on the buses ( im now a respectable member of society)
and would never use the buses as they are never on time
QUOTE]Hi everyone,
I'm currently planning on moving down to Bristol and buying a property (for the first time) there. The areas that I've been looking at are Stoke Gifford, Nailsea and Bedminster. I have read the previous threat on mse re Downend, Yate and Bradley Stoke -- does anyone know if Stoke Gifford/Little Stoke is similar to Bradley Stoke in terms of local amenities? are the houses older than the ones in B Stoke?
Nailsea seems very nice but my major concern is whether the motorway up to Almondsbury gets too busy at peak times (as that's the route that my bf would have to travel on to work). does anyone have experience on this please?
Bedminster is close to Bristol city centre but I worry about the area slightly. is it as nice as the other two? what about Bedminster Down? are they too close to the 'rough' areas in Bristol?
Any comments and recommendations of other areas would be greatly appreciated! :T Many thanks
