iBook G4 tiger 10.4 booting problem

I was working on an email when the sytem crashed and partly froze. I was just able to shut it down. Now it won't boot, just get the apple logo on the screen.
Have tried whacking under neath where the HD is, as suggested in other forums, but this didn't work. Have also tried to run a hardware test, but only get a long message.
First line reads:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E0BF4) : Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook6, 3".
Last line reads:
panic: We are hanging here
No need to say yes I'm panicking!

sounds like a kernel panic to me.
try the thing suggested in your thread on the apple forums (which happens to be the only other hit on google when you google the error code)0 -
I tried that but it didn't work. I no longer have the original CDs and have been trying to run the hardware test using a friend's one.
Don't really know what else to do. One possible solution I thought could be to link up my mac to my friend's and run the disk utility from there. I also need to recover all my music stuff!!!0 -
if you can access the file manager, have a look in /library/logs/panic.log to see if anything in the log will point towards what caused the kernel panic.
The following links might help with trying to identify the cause/fix the problem:

Forgot to mention that when I start the computer holding the contol key down, and then select the hd drive, and then forward, I get a sort of non smoking sign without the sigarette. What does this mean?0

Your friend must have an Intel Mac by the sounds of things. His startup disc will not work on your PPC computer.I tried that but it didn't work. I no longer have the original CDs and have been trying to run the hardware test using a friend's one.

Your solution may work: start up your computer (ensuring it is plugged into the mains and connected via firewire to your friend's Mac) using target disc mode (hold down 'T' at startup) and test the hard drive. Make a copy of your data too. Do not try to install the OS using your friend's computer as the OS installed will not work for the same reason why his disc causes a kernel panic (Intel disc).

You will need a copy of a PPC version (or universal binary version) of OS X before your even think about reinstalling - if that's your intention. Let us know how you get on with the hard drive first and I'll come back to advise you further if needed.

I've checked and your right he's got an Itel based Mac.
Is is worth buying the CDs off ebay, you think?0 -
I would first use target disk mode (as outlined in my previous post), backup your data and then use disk first aid to check and repair your disk. If it works, saves you having to pay for anything. If it doesn't then you will go down the eBay route.
Having said that, you may want an OS CD/DVD in case you need it for future use. If you do decide to buy a Mac OS DVD from eBay (or otherwise), check your iBook processor speed.
- If it is 800 Mhz, you must buy a version no higher than 10.4 (10.4.11 is highest supported).
- If a higher clock speed, you must buy a version no higher than 10.5 (10.5.8 highest supported).
If you go above these, then the OS you buy will not work on your iBook.0
