Carbolic soap uses?

Options
Saw some huuuuge bars of carbolic soap for £1.00 at a cut price shop in my town. I know this was used for loads of things years and years ago, but what for I'm not sure. Didn't buy it because although it was cheap, until I know I can use it for some good OS reason, I wasn't going to part with my quid! :D

So then, does anyone know what you can do with it (apart from washing that is!) and is it good OS?

It was used for household cleaning to clean and disinfect (the days when doorsteps/floors were scrubbed ;) ) and of course, the laundry.
Pieces would be cut off whenever it was needed so that your laundry wasn't washed with the same piece used on your scrubbing brush for the floors etc.

    HTH :)

Smells foul. I am sure there are now better products on the market, such as stardrops. Interesting find though - I wouldn't mind some for my class when we study WW2.

Ooh no, I used to love the smell!! Haven't smelt any for about thirty years though, so maybe I wouldn't like it now.

Oh I love the smell of carbolic soap too and it reminds me very much of my childhood. You have just set off a craving for the smell. :)

It reminds me of tinned baths by an open fire...which is strange coz I have never had one.

    Smells gorgeous.

God I hate that smell, reminds me of getting the skin scrubbed off me by my mam with a rough flannel when I was a kid.
