Cockroaches - Any Old Style tips?

  • I live in a 1920's block and I freaked  when I saw one. I got straight onto the managing agents who then sent a pest controller round to spray (I must ask him what it is, thanks Softstuff) Since I saw the first one I phone them every two months and since then I have only seen one more. The troule is that some people in my block are quite content to live with an infestation:confused: .

I looked on the internet and was horrified to learn what illnesses kids can suffer if you have 'roaches. So keep food covered and inaccessible and that should deter them. The other thing it not to stress too much about them, they will always be with us in areas of multi occupancy. You just have to make sure you're doing your bit to keep 'em out of your castle!
It's up to me now and nobody else.

    Hi,
I had them in my last house and had council come out to spray regularly. Only really got rid of them after we had the whole row of houses treated with a pesticide "smoke bomb" treatment. I remember we had to stay out of the house for a few hours when this was done. Also keep up the treatments - at least once a year - or they will come back.

    Hi Ya,

Yes, keep up with the treatments, but also don't forget to look for the eggs the leave behind, the 'smoke bombs etc. do not kill these, they tend to lay these in the edges of the carpets and along walls behind the refrig, as it is warm. They look like little brown beans. So just when you think you have solved it the babies make a come back.

(when you find some I would suggest you flush them down the toilet for safe measure!)

    Hope this helps!

:confused: Will they really? I'll admit to the fact that I wouldnt even recognise one if I saw them...and I'm in my 50s...so I'm very puzzled by that comment.

If I did ever spot one - once I had found out what it was - I'd hit the roof screaming and not come back down again till there wasnt one around within a 100 metre radius (or more).

Am wondering if there isnt a way to make sure and certain that once they are gone they are definitely gone...for good. The thought of loadsa nasty chemicals sprayed around any more than once at the outside.....yuk! I'd be looking up the chemical/s concerned to see if they were hazardous to people.

    Hmmmm...just googled Pyrethrum and found:

    www.realgreenlawns.com/austin_tx_texas/Pyrethrum.htm

    UMMM.....

Having read that - my personal plan of action would be to decide:

    1. Find out exactly which insecticide the Council planned to use and how they planned to apply it - and I would stay someplace else for a while afterwards.
    2. Ensure that before they sprayed they gave leaflets to all tenants explaining re those "eggs" a previous poster mentioned and telling them how to deal with these.
    3. I would be finding out what the position is re troublesome tenants being evicted by the Council (as I understand that its easier than it was for Councils to evict troublesome tenants - there has been some recent change in the law or other), finding out who the tenants were that were responsible for the problem in the first place and talking to my local Councillor about the possibilities for getting them evicted - hoping to avoid them being in place to create the problem again.

Well....does this constitute "help"? - the thought that cockroaches are considered a delicacy in China:D

Hmm. Thanks for that. I shall file that next to my cookbook - Sweetbreads, the forgotten treat:confused:. I am aware of a number of common substances that contain insects - food colour for instance as well as some sauces from the Far East but I think the direct approach is not for me.

Thanks for all other comments and suggestions. The Borax is down. The Council will try and sort out the problem and I shall be pushing them. I shall be informing the residents of the kind of problems that can be caused. I know they are a relatively 'common' pest for cities but this is the first time I've experienced them. Sadly my kitchen is in a state of some disrepair due to the building works so all I can do is try to get on with the remodeling as soon as possible! I shall look out for egg cases.

    Thanks again.:o

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!

I 'think' most local councils pest control offer a free service, it may be worth giving them a ring and asking.

    Hi joannew,

There's an earlier thread with some advice on getting rid of cockroaches so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.
