castration

  • Hi one of my dogs had an undescended testicle and my vet advised us to have him castrated over 12 months of age.
I remember the vet telling us he'd be sleepy and lethargic for awhile after the op - er not mine lol he was full of energy once the anesthetic wore off, was a nightmare to try and keep him calm.

He died last year from prostate cancer aged 8.

Why did I think this was about a cat rather than a dog? lol

  • Had my pup done last month when he was 7 months old. Operation was really straight forward and despite him being groggy the day it was done, he was back to his loony self the following day.

I agree entirely with 'foreign correspondent' that if the vet had advised it is ok at 5 months then go with that, and take advantage of them both being done together. Good luck!

Diggs was castrated in the rescue and he also had to have a retained testicle removed - there was a little scar on the side of his tummy, near the groin. We picked him up from the rescue about 10 days after he had had the op and he was absolutely right as rain and bouncing everywhere, bless. Ive noticed it seems quite common in border terriers.
  • thanks everybody for your throughts, i am going to go ahead with alfie castration i think its for the better may save problems later on
  • There is a definite risk that an undescended testicle can become cancerous and castration in these cases is strongly recommended.

I personally would wait until the dog is about 2 years old, allowing puberty to pass and his behaviour to settle. Obviously the risk of waiting too long is that the retained testicle could become cancerous so it's a difficult balance.
  • Hi just a quick note although probably too late now.

If your dogs are insured, then it may be worth checking the policy. Although normal castration is never covered, if it is being done on medical grounds such as this it may be covered by the insurance company.
