I think it's the import previas (lucida, estima,) that seem to have a lot of problems and it's usually the diesels that weren't available here at the time. Head gasket problems seems to ring a bell.
My sister has a zafira diesel and loves it, but no room for luggage or shopping if you're using all 7 seats. I had a Toyota corolla verso diesel, nice car, same luggage problem as the zafira though.
Ssanyong rodius has got to be the ugliest people carrier on the road, I don't think you'll get an older Ssanyong because they all broke down or fell to bits, I think, well at least you don't see any on the road.
    ML.

Those are the ones. You see on ebay lucida/estima/previa, all between K -M reg, all broken!
Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession :o:o
  • In your budget I would go for a Sharan / Galaxy / Alhambra. We have a 4.5 year old Sharan - had it from 6 weeks old and in 60K its only cost routine servicing, a set of brake pads and some tyres so cant fault it. Only warranty work its had was a fault in the parking sensors, but TBH think my other half broke them anyway!

Plenty to chose from and lots of common mechanicals.

Oh yeah - ours averages 42 mpg but you can nudge 50 on a long run if you are gentle

The OP has £3500 to spend which will buy them a much younger though petrol Previa that is well past all those problems then:D
Cars between K and M reg are usually on their last legs anyway.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Glad to see no ones recommended the french rubbish ;)

The Kia Sedona is a good call. Dirt cheap too.
  • I got a Kia Sedona 2.9 Diesel LX.

Proper 7 seater. Not great on fuel around town (28mpg) but not so bad on the motorway (38mpg). Wouldnt go near a petrol one though.

Not the most stylish but nice and comfortable. Middle and back seats lift out completely so you get a sort of van.

Bit of a !!!!!! to park but it is a big car...

Fairly cheap to buy as well.
  • Toyota Landcruiser or Mitsubishi Shogun, if you want to look really hard.
    Out on blue six..
It's Chips and Jackets, Peas and Trousers.
  • dont go peugeot! citreon! renault espace well maybe a consideration if nothing else transpires, ford galaxy,vw sharan, and seat alhanbra all share the same chassy and body types and some parts so parts are widely available and relatively cheap enough. zafira im not fan on vauxhall/opel's and they havent impressed me so far known a few people who have owned them and havent kept them more than 12 month to 2 years.

if you dont care about looks then the fiat multipla but personally it looks like its been designed by a 6 year old outside and a 70 year old on the inside (soz all you senior citizens).

toyota landcruisers are expensive to run and on parts and a shogun well if you want a 4x4 then maybe.
  • I have had a Honda Stream for about 5 years and it would be worth about £3500 now. I'm not selling and expect to keep it for at least another 5 years. Comfortable, great to drive & reliable. Reasonable operating costs from the petrol engine. Mine hit 70,000 miles and I was pleased to find it has a cam chain so doesn't need cam belts changed. It is more of a 5+2 than a 7 seater.
  • Grand Voyager 2.5 diesel.
32-33 MPG round town, 7 REAL seats and a massive boot (not alot of 7 seaters have a decent boot).
As mentioned about the kia, take the seats out and you've got a van.

The car less reliable than a Grand Voyager (as determined by an index of repair cost vs. fault frequency) is a Jeep, which is another vehicle from the same group. In fact you would be better off with a Peugeot, Citroen or Renault.
Friends have one, they only do 4000 miles a year, it's 4 years old. If you count number of garage visits over the miles covered, if I had this vehicle on my annual mileage it would be in the garage 3 to 4 times a year for repairs alone. Unacceptable. Don't get me started on father in laws Jeep...:(
