Homemade shampoo - easy and mild...

Options
I have found this old homemade shampoo "recipe" and have tried it this morning. It did well on my hair (fine, a tad oily).

Two tablespoons of soap suds (I grated some mild soap I had)
Half a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda.

Mix the lot in 1 litre (about 1-3/4 pints) of hot water, and use it for two or three washes at the same sitting.

As I said I am satisfied with the results, so I hope it works for others.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I saw no scum...but then I did a more thorough rinse than usual (not OS as far a water usage is concerned, I know... :()

Katgoddess, I don't have a conditioner recipe, but I'm looking through old books. At the moment I'm using a Boots one. On another thread I mentioned about using egg yolk, which apparently makes a good conditioner, but I must admit I have to get used to this idea before I try it.:o

My daughter swears by a small amount of gentle fabric conditioner. She's using the new Fairy Sensitive, and her hair is really glossy. But she washes it daily, so I don't know how it would be on day 2.

    2 tbsp white vinegar
If you are worried about it bleaching your hair then steep some fresh rosemary in it for a while.
    1 litre warm water

For dry hair add 1tbsp aloe vera gel

    Side note:
Have now tried this with bicarb shampoo & it gets rid of the residue much easier than water .
Do NOT shave your legs before using this - it hurts!

    Hi all.

I am new here, my first post. I have read loads over the last couple of years on this site, its excellent.

Anyway, I have decided to use more traditional methods to clean around my home. 1 - for the economical point, and 2) I hate all the nasty stuff in products! You can pretty much use just vinegar, bicarb, lemon, and water for all your cleaning around the house, think of all that money saved on expensive products. Im loving it.

I would really like to make my own shampoo, and cant find a shampoo recipe as such on the net, they are usually just rinse recipes. Has anyone ever made their own or know how to make it? Ive had a look into castille soap and essential oils, anyone tried this?

    Thanks

Hello and welcome  You can do without shampoo altogether, for Hardcore Old Style ;) After about 2 weeks, the greasiness is no longer noticable

Failing that we have an older thread on hommade shampoo. I'll add your question to that so that you can read the suggestions there.

    Hi

I was wondering if anybody knew of alternatives to shampoo? My reason for this is twofold, wanting a) to stop my skin absorbing all those chemicals that are used (having read an article in The Ecologist magazine yesterday) and b) it also occured to me that I could save a great deal of money.

    Any ideas welcome. :)

I have used dead sea mud soap (makes hair a bit dry after a while), mild baking soda solution (may lighten hair colour - use 1/4 tsp per cup of water), and cider vinegar rinse (1 tbsp in a litre jug) all as shampoo alternatives, which are fairly successful when not used too often (not everyday, in other words.) I have a sensitivity to SLS, so these work great for me, and a few drops of almond oil spread through the hair act as conditioner.

It's probably worth trying these out when you don't have anywhere to be, in case they don't work for you - I have stupidly resilient hair that not even prolonged exposure to bleach can hurt. HTH.

You can use soap nuts to make shampoo, if you goggle it you should come up with recipes, you also use these to wash clothing, the mix i made up as shampoo cleans my windows beautifully!
It's the start of the no takeaway challenge.
