Car finance without a licence?

Hi there,

My partner moved in with me in may last year and along with him came his volkwagen polo which is on HP through Black horse last february.

His mum got the HP in her name as my boyfriend wasnt able to get credit. Now that he has moved in with me and my 3 children we have decided we need a bigger car.

He went back to Manchester over the weekend and went car hunting with his mum and found a bigger car. It worked out that the car he has now is worth £600 more than the one he has seen so its worked our pretty well price wise.

The problem he has encountered now is that for some reason the car finance companies that the car dealer is using will not touch his mum without a licence......one of them being Black Horse who she took out a HP agreement with last february. Can anyone think why the reason for this would be? she has excellent credit and my boyfriend has always kept up with putting the payments into his mums account so that Black Horse are always paid on time.

Any advice is appretiated thanks

  • Does she not have a license or simply lost it?

Usually for HP finance (it might be always) as the hirer you sign to say that you will keep the car fully comprehensively insured at all times during the agreement. If she has not got a license she cannot do that.

The easiest way is for her to apply for Personal Loan i.e. one that is not secured against the car, the garage could probably arrange this for you but it is probably cheaper for her to do it online/through her bank.
  • Hi thanks for replying.

No she does not have a licence what so ever, she has never driven, yet in feb last year black horse gave her car finance without a licence but now that my boyfriend wants a bigger car and the car dealer went through blackhorse to do the trade in they have refused as she does not have a licence.

Alot of companies are changing their lending criteria which is what it sounds like blackhorse has done. As someone has said why doesn't she look at a loan? Interest rates are often lower than car finance.

Count yourself as lucky the first time when i was working in sales it was always a fundamental requirement for the reason i stated above.

The dealer or blackhorse should be able to give you any other reasons.
  • So lets get this straight. You and your boyfriend and 3 kids want a bigger car but you want his mother to buy it for you on HP???? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why don't you ask her to buy you a new sofa while you are at it?

And if you ask his mother really nicely she might wipe his backside for him too!!!!!!!

You would do well to make sure you understand the post before shooting from the hip?

The mother is fronting the agreement but the son is making all the payments and this is something that they want to continue on a new agreement.

An apology to the op would be nice?

I suspect what happened on the original deal was that the motor dealer noted on the documents that he had seen the mothers licence to make sure the deal went through ok.

The easiest way to resolve this is as Lemonade pockets says, for her to get a loan

No, the easiest way is for the son to stand on his own two feet and buy the car himself.

    Or do without.

Any need?? Not really beneficial to the OP is it?
  • Why not visit the bank. when i bought my car the finance companies were charging 19% by bank offered by 8.9%

and not only that but i have a ballon payment, making the repayments even cheaper - well until the last one, which at that time i'll be selling the car!
