Can anyone advise my car is a vw golf 6 yrs old i only have one key and now that wont start the car as the key was dropped and uncoded the chip so no car today. The AA towed me home now i need to get it towed to a vw dealership for them to unchip and rechip?could take two days for them to do it at 200.00 +vat. The problem is the AA won't tow me for 3 days as its the key that wont start the car not a mechanical fault.now i need to pay for a new key and pay someone to tow the car. I have been on to the person who owned the car to see if they have the code for the key and they don't.Any one out there have any ideas as to how i can over ride the code?i have tried taking the battery out of the car but just lost the codes for the radio.
cheers scruffpot

You could try posting in HONEST JOHN'S and ask the question in "the back room" from the menu on the LHS, where there is a realm of info.

  • lol, lets hope he's honest!

And if nothing else, this experience will ensure you look after that key in the future!

  • Don't you have a master key with it?

I'd try an auto locksmith, he should be able to reprogram the key to the car for you and a lot cheaper than a dealer and will come out to you.

Buy a used key, there are plenty on eBay:

One here. Make sure you get the correct model no though!

Assuming the blade part of your original key is okay, re-use it with the new key. You can then get the VW garage (or someone else with VAGCOM) to reprogram the immobiliser chip on the new key, can be up to £60 at a [strike]dealer[/strike] stealer.

You can reprogram manually but only if you have a key that already works!

You can probably find out more on the VW Mk4 Golf Forum.

Needless to say the reprogramming ability and cost of keys is probably why yours only came with one set!

Try a local diagnostic company, some are mobile so should be able to come to you.

hi everyone and thank you for reading my moan.
i waited all day for a moblie diagnostic fellow that was given to me by the AA he come and tried to start it by rebooting the chip then said he did'nt know what was wrong with it.wasted day so tomorrow i'm going to phone the AA back and ask them to tow it,As i do have relay recovery/home start so i don't think that they can refuse can they. I would try and get one on ebay but how would i know it would be the right key, could i not just take out the car battery and reconnect it again so that the thing thats not working would right its self.but in the mean time i will look at all the other forums just to see if i could get more info on the key so at least i would know what i'm talking about just in case i do have to phone around.thanks scruffpot
