Disability Living Allowance

Hi All,

Just wanted to ask how do you apply for DLA, what is the process??

I am currently receiving Disability Students Allowance, would this be affected by applying?

You go online or call them for a form

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/FinancialSupport/DisabilityLivingAllowance/DG_10011925

I would say apply online then send in additional information in a couple of weeks after you have submitted your online application.

Try get some help filling that, CAB, some charities for disabled people, your nurse if you see one regularly etc. It's hard to fill it out yourselves because it's long and hard.

One you submitted the form, it can take forever to hear something from them, mine took something like 3 months. But they do backdate it to the date when you made the claim. For online would be the date you created the form. You could also call them up for a form, that the day you call would be the day when they would start paying if successful.

I have no experience with DSA, but I have looked into it and isn't that only pay for your extra need for your studies? My guess is the 2 won't affect each other as you can spend your DLA money on whatever you like, or not spend it at all... (humm.... then why would someone need that extra money??)

    Good luck.
  • Thank you very much!!

Yes DSA helps with my studies.

Someone on the Benefits forum just posted a message saying they had problem with the direct gov gateway, the system you use to make claims online including DLA, so maybe you are better off calling them for a form. But don't download the form and take you time to fill that, if you do, they would only start paying you the date when the receive your form, which could be a big delay. It took 2 weeks for my online form to find its way from the system to the printer then the the decision maker's office. You don't want that if your form isn't date stamped to start off with.
  • get the forms and see if welfare rights or cab will help with them, they will be date stamped and you will have a month to send them back,a successful claim will be back dated to the date they were first sent out to you.
I wouldnt advise doing it online, but i would advise photo-copying the filled in forms before returning them and sending them registered post, also make sure your Gp knows you are claiming and that he is aware of your care/mobility needs as they will contact him.
