We're only 20 mins from Dover, and similar from the channel tunnel, so Europe tends to work out just as cheap as the uk...however, we'd prefer to leave the car at home, and jump on a train, or even a coach for a change. It's so frustrating though as it would seem we'd have to drive in the opposite direction- away from the channel ports- to get on a coach even. Why on earth can the coach not pick up in Dover docks? It seems so rational. Grrrr.

Even if you are going for a day you should have time to do both Brugge and Oostend. Neither are huge places. Gent is further away and is almost like a bigger Brugge but with better shopping and less tourists (but I would say not so charming).0

Hiya - my brother lives in Brussels and has done for many years so we are always back and forth. The trains in Belgium are great and cheap it is so easy to just get a train from Brussels - it takes about an hour and is a nice journey. If you live in Kent Ebbsfleet or Ashford are best for Eurostar and you can get a youth ticket if under 16 or 18 not sure which. Best price is £69 return on Eurostar but so quick. One hour 40 mins and straght into heart of Brussels. Even tho might be more expensive than ferry you save so much time. If you get good connections all you have to do is go from Brussels Midi station to Central Station on metro (really easy) and get the train to Brugge from there. I done this with my mum last year, just be careful to look at the trains as they go to Blakenberg and Knokk at the end of the line. When you get out of the station in Brugge it is an easy walk or good buses and you'll have no probs as all spk English. The other person who mentioned Ghent is right it's lovely there too. Not as many canals but more modern and more to do in the evenings.0
