Removing carpet tape/glue?

The previous owners of our house have glued/taped down the large rugs in the lounge onto the cream carpet. We want to clean the carpet but the rugs won't come up without leaving some gluey residue behind. Plus the rugs are in the wrong place to fit in with our furniture layout and they are quite large.
What can I use to remove the glue residue?
thanks
