Selling total loss car
Wasn't sure what to title this, but anyway mid december I was in an accident and my poor megane was wrecked, I think it's a CAT C, it's not driveable.
The insurance company have paid out (a very fair amount), and it's up to me to scrap the car.
One of the blokes at the accident repair centre has offered £50 for it - that's all I'd get at a scrap yard, but I'd have to pay to get it there so I'm more than happy with this, but I just wanted to check that it's legal for me to sell the car in this way? And do I just sign the logbook over to him like a normal, perfectly healthy car? He knows all the damage (he did the inspection on it!), I'm guessing he'll split it for spares or something.
Just want to make sure I don't have to do anything different!
Thanks

As long as you have the written authority of the insurer to dispose of it I don't see any problem.0

Depends whether he wants to take it under his name or under his garage or whatever it is. If he's a registered motor trader then you need to fill in section V5C/3 of the certificate (the yellow bit) and you have to hand the form to him unsigned (he needs that for scrapping). (Check direct.gov.uk/motoring for full details.)
Obviously if he wants it for personal reasons then you would do it the normal way.
And of course what LandyAndy says, applies.0 -
Do you not fancy parting it off? You could easily make £50 off the seats alone, then anything else would be a bonus. It wouldn't be too hard to do on ebay. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0

That's what I was thinking - Ebay is your friend. You'd be amazed how many people people would pay £5 for the rear view mittor, £100 for the wheels and tyres, £100 for the engine, £50 for the seats, £10 for the front grille, etc etc.0 -
most of the scrap dealers advertising in my local paper are £130 min we have used 2 different ones and always got at least £100 I am in Thurrock Essex0

To be honest I'm still suffering back problems from the accident so not physically able to split it for spares, no way to get it home (driving it wouldn't be advisable) and nowhere to put the parts once it was split. Dad and brother are doing minor work on the car I bought to replace it, but Dad's disabled so splitting a car is just out of the question.
Scrap places down here you're lucky if they don't charge you for the privilege, so many cars going to them at the moment they won't pay much at all for them0 -
Well here is a list of body panel prices (roughly) that I needed to buy for the new Jeep:-
Bumper £350
Front Wing (inc eyebrow) £350
Headlight £235
OK I bought mine all secondhand at about 30% which I thought was expensive but for my year and model parts were like hens teeth.
So if it were me I would be going round and even if you only priced items up at say £20 each it soon adds up.0 -
I already had a look on Ebay, there's lots of bits on there at £10 or less and not selling, and as much as I loved my megane, it had almost 130k mileage and a lot of dents and bits. The back end is completely useless now.
I know it's not very MSE but I just don't want any more hassle, been stressed to hell these last couple of months, just want it gone. It's that and the nowhere to put it part! I don't think, stripping it and leaving bits on the street is the best idea..0
