Oyster card from Watford Junction

Sorry, this is rather a specific query. I have tried to find out via National Rail Enquiries & TFL but am getting nowhere, so wondered if anyone here happens to know...?

Watford Junction now accepts Oyster cards, but I am trying to ascertain what would be charged if one used the card to travel first to London Euston and then on the tube network for a day. (Then return via Euston).

Would it be capped at a day travelcard price? Or a return fare to Euston, plus the tube fares?

If anyone knows, I would be grateful for advice. My daughter plans to travel at the weekend and i need to be sure there is enough credit on her card!

An all day travel card on Saturday is classed as off peak, so therefore this is the charge:

    Zones 1-8 + Watford Junction is £14.20
If she can go from Watford High St, which is just down the road its only £9 for an off Peak travel card for Zones 1-9, so using your oyster she would need to have £9 on it, you dont have to buy a paper ticket just keep using the oyster

Fast trains to Euston only run from Watford Junction then Bushey so if she was to use Watford High St i would advise that she got off at the next stop (Bushey) and swap platforms as the slow train to Euston takes over an hour but the fast from bushey is about 17 mins and only stops once more at Harrow and Wealdstone

    Hope it helps

  • It gets quite complicated all this new oyster business. The key seems to be experimentation.

There is no such thing as a return journey on Oyster... they are all single fares.

On National Rail and DLR, Oyster is able to calculate a single fare even if you have used multiple methods of travel.

For example, stations like Canary Wharf which has both a Tube and DLR station. As long as you touch out of one and into the other within 15 minutes Oyster joins it all into a single journey and charges a single fare. Same goes for Waterloo Tube/National Rail and Vauxhall Tube/National Rail. You touch out and then back in within 15 mins and you get charged a single fare for a combined Tube/National Rail/DLR journey.

Technically, it should then stop deducting and cap at the daily travelcard limit.

Where it must get complicated however is the time at which you first use your card (remember, there are now on-peak and off-peak fares) and so it can be difficult to work out when it might stop capping. For example, I might use my card at 8am during the peak but only off-peak for the rest of the day.

Weekend is all off-peak. Consider the option of buying a paper travelcard instead as it makes things easier and removes the need to touch in/out for it to work.

Station-to-Station fares can be found here
Daily caps can be found here
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place
  • Thanks Airlie Bird, despite all my playing around this morning, I never came across that page which is just what I need!
