Abbey charges
hanes
I applied to change accounts from a co-operative, to a abbey account.
what i thought i was applying for is a current account, and what i got was a basic account which i already had with co-op.
While i applied i changed all direct debits over to abbey thinking i would recieve the account i asked for, within a few days direct debits were due and they bounced as there was no money in the abbey account to cover it.
so i went through the approach of internet banking to cancel the direct debits but they had already charged me three charges for returned direct debits, and now this is showing on my credit report as late payments!!
through my stupidity more than anything i didnt think they would chase this up as i didnt use the account at all and did cancel all activity within the account.
can i do anything to get them to drop the £135 charges, and remove the late payments against my report as they gave me the wrong account in the first place!!
thanks

Have a read of the bank reclaiming guide
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges
You'll see that following the Supreme Court decision last November, the chances of successfully reclaiming charges in now limited unless you fall into the finacial hardship category and/or manage to negotiate something with the bank directly (or perhaps with the FOS).
In particular it says in lage print:The safest thing to do is plan your finances on the fact you WON’T get a payout, but cross your fingers in the hope you will
When changing bank accounts, always ensure there are sufficient funds left in the old account to cover any possible outgoings until you are certain the old account has been closed.
Also, don't ever ignore your debts. They very, very rarely just disappear and often come back to bite later, possibly at a much higher cost. Did you ever see the BBC bailiffs series a few years ago where people thought they could often ignore a £35 debt? They often ended up owing about £1000 or more "Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
