I want to buy a Bobbi Brown Gel eyeliner! Can anybody help me spot fakes?

Options
I'm hoping somebody wiser in the ways of eBay will have advice or guidelines for me. :)

Hundreds of £16 retail Bobbi Brown gel eyeliners have been selling for about £3 or £6 with postage. Does this mean that they are fakes and the seller doesn't care how much they go for or that the seller's just very unlucky over and over again?

Can anybody spot the genuine ones in this lot? Some of them must be surely?

The other thing that's been bothering me is that several different sellers seem to be using the same couple of photos. Seems a bit weird.

I've bought some fake Benefit and some fake perfume before so I could do without the aggro really. Any suggestions?

I think the usual eBay rules apply hon. If it seems a bit too good to be true on eBay then it probably is. And £1.85 for Bobbi Brown definitely looks a bit TGTBT to me. If someone will sell other fake items as some of the sellers on there have by the look of it then I wouldn't trust their Bobbi Brown stuff either.

Use the feedback tracker to do the trawling for you, and if there's even a sniff of a fake then cross that seller off the list.

  • It's a tricky one this. I bought some genuine BB gel eyeliner for my wedding but within about 6 weeks it had gone clumpy and icky in the pot.

I wrote to BB via their official website and complained. They sent me a replacement pot and the sticker on the bottom was transparent, whereas the original one had a black label.

So that is not much use in finding fakes and, unlike MAC plastic pots, these glass pots don't have any discernible number/lettering on them.

Hmmmm. Personally I don't buy from stock photos - always ask to see the actual item that is being sold.

Very tricky - i can give you ingredients lists etc off the back of my box but I have the "black ink" rather than "graphite".

Some shades don't sell too well - which accounts for low prices -but I wouldn't have thought "graphite" would be one of them.

Individual sellers who are just selling one pot may accept low prices if the item was an unwanted gift/competition win or if the pot was stolen from a dept store. I would tend to think that sellers with lots and lots of the same item for sale are more likely to be selling fakes - but that is personal opinion and not fact.

Oh - and the actual RRP of the product is £15 NOT £20 as some of the sellers have stated.

If I had to buy one from eBay, I'd be likely to go for one like THIS as the listing states it is 100% genuine and therefore, if it is not, you have a good claim against them.

Or THIS one. I'd ask for more pics and info as to where it comes from etc.

Again, just personal opinion hun. If you want more info on the box I have, just PM me :D

I would steer clear of people selling with little or no feedback.
Also what concerns me on one of the lists I clicked on was that the picture was not clear at all.
    Best wishes
  • Or if they are selling them go for the 'unused testers'. Have never heard of fake tester items.

I guess it's just me that sees 100% genuine and thinks that it must mean fake then. :o

Mind you we have actually bought 100% genuine items before that have been 100% fake, so it's not entirely unfounded. :rotfl:
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I bought a Bvlgari "tester" on eBay based on that logic, but my boyfriends mum says it is a fake and she's been wearing that perfume forever.

100% genuine puts me off too. It sounds too market trader to me. I'd rather shop with a business seller with a return policy. If it's not real they're getting it back sharpish!

I would not buy from any of those sellers listing loads of them at 99p. Obviously their stock is worthless.

I bought some Bobbi Brown gel eyeliners direct from Bobbi Brown's website last week and they have the black label not the clear one.
