Kublax - a warning

Hi everyone

This is my first post, but I thought I should warn you about the troubles I've had with Kublax. Despite feeling slightly uncomfortable handing over such sensitive data to a 3rd party I decided to give them a go due to a number of good reviews from credible sources.

Everything went fine for the first few days, although their website seemed a little bit badly thought out in some places and downright buggy in others. Then suddently I wasn't able to login to my account. Now there is a chance I may have just forgotten my password, despite that fact that I was sure it could only one of 3 passwords. No bother, I thought I'd just click the "forgotten password" link to reset my password. After clicking this link the site informed me that I would receive an email with instruction on how to reset my password (standard procedure). However the email never arrived (yes I checked my junk folder). I tried again, and again. Still no email.

I tried contacting them via their contact form. Waited two days. No reply. Sent another contact form - again not reply. This was a week ago and I am yet to hear anything. I also tried the phone number that was hidden away on their site (on their "Privacy Policy" page) however I just got a recorded BT message saying that number "was not currently accepting calls". I even tried to contact them via Twitter (no response).

I am left feeling extremely worried that I have entrusted such sensitive information to a company which is clearly incompetent, not just from a customer service point of view but from a technical point of view. I am a web developer and I know that if a company can't even implement a basic password recovery feature, what hope have they got with their site's security?

All I want to do now is be able to login to my account to delete all my data, and put my mind at rest, but I can't even do that.

So anyway, I just thought I'd share that in case anyone was condering using them.

    markross.

I had a similar experience. You cant delete all your data, you have to email them, which I did, and also got no reply.

They use Yodlee so in theory dont keep your bank login credentials, they are passed through to Yodlee, who do look pretty good and safe.

In any case I too felt uncomfortable, and resorted to changing my security details at my banks, which was a bit of a hassle.

So far the best alternatives in the UK, are lovemoney, yodlee itself and two beta services on the way moneydashboard and wehuhu. Moneydashboard has a closed beta, wehuhu is open, but is still very early, I'm actually using them but with a firefox plug in for smile and a statement upload for my other accounts.

Sorry you're having trouble with Kublax, markross, but you might be interested in signing up for the Beta version of Money Dashboard, to try it before we open it to the market.

What is the difference between Kublax and Money Dashboard?

This sounds great. Think I'll set me up a little website to help people manage their money, ask them for their security details, and then.....

OK. Over cynical. But personally I'll be keeping my details to myself.
  • Unfortunately, Kublax users were sent an email yesterday to let them know that Kublax has gone into administration. I've put the details about what should happen to your account data in bold:

It is with great regret that we announce the closure of our service as we have been forced to take the business into administration. Over the course of the last 6 months we have been trying hard to raise funding which would have allowed us to launch our enhanced new product and develop our offering further. Unfortunately we now have to admit defeat.

We are sorry that we have not been able to repay your trust in Kublax and particularly disappointed not to be able to launch the new enhanced version of the service which was being shaped to a very large extent by your Feedback on the current service.

Kublax's partner, Yodlee, will be deleting all user data, including online banking details from its servers. Once deleted no further information will be gathered and stored for Kublax customers. Your transactional data will also be completely erased from our servers by close of business on Friday 19th February. We will not pass your data on to any third parties.

Sadly, they've not updated their website with any of this info, or removed any of the sign up pages, so some people could still register from the looks of things.
  • If I were a Kublax customer, I would be changing each set of login credentials that I had trusted them to store on their systems.

How many times do we hear of data being recovered from hard drives found on dumps, or bought off auction sites?!
