side effects from the contraceptive implant

So I had the implant put in 6 months ago an the side effects have just been horrible :(

I've been bleeding everyday since I had this thing put in. I swear to god I should buy shares in tampax
The headaches are really bad
My skin is bad compared to what It used to be!
Worst of all is the weight gain. I've managed to lose a lot of of it but it's coming off at a snails pace!! I'm still not quite back to the size I was before

I'm just after others experiences as to the side effects (if any) they suffered from and If they died down after a few months

It's been 6 months now, I've had enough!!

  • it doesnt agree with everyone so if you really feel its not for you and obviously the side effects arent nice id speak to your doctor and have it removed and use something that you feel much better with.
one of my friends had it in and she had horrible side effects too and they removed it for her and put her on the pill.

You can get those side effects with any contraception involving hormones. Speak to your doctor, as the previous poster says they might suggest you take the pill, as you can just stop taking that if it doesn't agree with you.

    Hiya,

I just wanted to say, I had the implant put in in January and I really rate it. I haven't had any periods, tummy pains, headaches or any of the other things I was worried about. I don't feel bloated and I'm not hungry all the time (like i seemed to be on the pill) I've lost a little weight as a result of this.

I think that 6 months is long enough for you to know if it's working for you and it sounds like it isn't. I was told when mine was put in that i had to commit to at least a year of having it (because of the expense of putting it in) but there is no point keeping it in if its making you so unhappy. You should go and see your doctor and talk through some other options.

    Good luck x

I've had mine a year and a half and nothing but problems! Bleed consantly for the first 3 months and my doctor gave me the wrong pill to counteract it. So he gave me a stronger version of the first pill, then when that still didn't work, told me to take both!

Over a year later I'm still having heavy bleeding, but with no pattern to it. IE on for two weeks, off for a month then on again twice in three weeks.

The fact that there's a six month waiting list to have it taken out is a massive indicator that women just can't wait to get them out because they're having problems!

Can't wait until June when mine will be out!

Im on my 2nd implant (due out 2011)...My 1st implant was brilliant, no periods for 3yrs and no side effects....

The 2nd implant has given me 4 heavy periods since April 09 so my body has reacted differently this time. Maybe have yours out, give it a break for 6months and have a new 1 put in?

I bled continuously for months after having my implant fitted and was encourage to try to keep it in for a year as it was supposed to be a long term solution. My doctor prescribed me with the pill to control the bleeding in the end, which I still take now.
In July, it will have been in two years (wow, that's gone quick!)
My best friend got the implant at the same time as me and it affected her in other ways, the most noticeable being the change in size of her breasts, they were massive. Unfortunately she had it removed within months due to weight gain and is now on the pill.

Sorry its not worked for you, I forget I even have it.

I had mine in in 1994 when it was 5 posts and lasted 5 years!!! I have had them ever since and never had a period since nor any side effects (that I know of).

The only problem this time is that this is the 4th or 5th one I have had in the same arm and don't think she put it in right as it sometimes hurts lots when it comes to the surface of the skin yet I never even felt the others!

I know loads who have had problems so get it out and give your body a rest its not worth the hassle for you.:A
  • i had the implant put in about 18 months ago and i had it taken out about 5 months after!! i too was constantly bleeding and suffering from headaches, i find my body copes better with the pill so i am now back on that and everything is how it should be again!! :D

Sounds like the side effects I had:

Acne (which still hasn't gone since I got it out and I have scars, great!)
Constant bleeding (for over a year, they wouldnt take it out before as apparently it was a waste to the NHS - even though I was having to take the contraceptive pill WITH it, and that didn't work either)
    Weight Gain
    Mood Swings
Colostrum leaking from my breasts - I kept thinking I was pregnant!!
Hair loss (which is now steadily growing back)

    It made me anaemic too.

If you don't get on with it, I'd get it out ASAP

I got mu first implant in January this year.

I had no bleeding, then one period then light bleeding for 1 month (ish) its all gone now.
Spots wise, got a few more spots but they seemed to go away when it settled down, there back again due to clinque products though!!

No weight gain infact i've lost weight.
No migraines which is surprising as I normally suffer from these a lot!

I do rate the implant but agree its not for everyone!
