disable part of laptop screen

an old laptops screen has been damaged so a quarter of it doesn't work now

it is only used for occasional voice chat through skype and the rest of it is working fine - a new screen costs about £80 without fitting - so it is probably best to just buy a new laptop instead - in the meantime is their a way to disable part of the screen so that windows only shows things in the working portions?

  • You could try lowering the resolution. This might shrink the display area away from the edges (if it doesn't, there may be an option either in the BIOS or graphics driver control panel to make it do this).
  • What laptop do you need a screen for ? ive picked up cheap screens on ebay before for next to nothing and they are relatively simple to fit...

Can you not just use an external monitor?

If not, what about buying the same laptop second hand but faulty, with a working screen (say one with smashed plastics, or faulty motherboard, but screen fine) and swapping the screens over....

Always wondered why there is no 'Thread lock' type thing, as on many other forums.
