used car: no. of previous owners

My previous car is now registered to the finance company, but because i chose to voluntarily end the agreement

They would only register it if they didnt have the V5 in your name. Otherwise they would have filled out the yellow section as "Passed to Trade"

If it has a full VW service history I cant see why you are worried? 3 in 5 years really isnt a lot. First guy may have changed a car every year like some people do.

Our car is just over 12 months old and we are its 3rd owner! It was registered by Ford Motor Company and then sold. The Ford dealer who bought it from them two weeks after it was first registered then registered it to himself, planning to use it for a few months, until we bought it off him at 2 months old and 1600 miles...

Condition is probably much more important than number of owners. Are the tyres a decent make or are they cheapo ones, Is it definitely a full VW service history - you could contact the garage that serviced it to see if they know anything about it.

There can be lots of reasons why a car changes hands - could be inter-family etc, so don't discount it without a bit of digging. Having said that, there are lots of Golfs out there, so if you have reservations, keep looking, something else will turn up fairly quickly

If several owners in a short period can be explained, as above, then that is fine. However, lots of owners should make you ask questions. If finance companies are involved, I would definitely want to investigate the cars history and bit more closely. Has it been properly serviced at regular intervals?

You may feel happier buying from a VW main dealer rather than an independent. Listers group are brill.
