I installed Service Pack 2 on 21/10/2009 and I do have it set up for auto updates as I quite regularly have to install stuff

Is the service pack not what you are talking about?

And it was AVG that was recommended from here!!! What would you recommend instead?

If you have SP2 installed then fine-your scan just came up as Vista Home Basic so I assumed it was not installed.
AVG Free was often recommended on here a year or so ago, but it has gone downhill. Try Avast or Kaspersky (the later free with Barclays Online Banking).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I always thought AVG was good as well?

Rather frustratingly that is the PC starting to slow down again tonight:mad: I did run the 2 scans as advised and the PC also had it's normal daily run with AVG today....gaaahhhh!!!

Does anyone else recommend uninstalling AVG and using something else?
  • Ok - your computer is running slow.

    Not a fan of AVG so it is up to you - no product is 100% and for every anti virus mentioned if I looked I could find an example where a virus has got by, having said that some are better than others;

Paid versions I would suggest Kaspersky or Nod 32 and on the free side I would suggest Avira. There is nothing wrong with Avast or AVG but I like the look and feel of avira.

Which every route you choose make sure you download or have the installation disc of the new product before uninstalling your current product.
  • Can you also do me another Malwarebytes Scan - please make sure you update it first and then do a FULL scan.

    Cheers

Because so many people on here have reported that it is no longer effective protection compared to other free options, such as Avira or Kaspersky.

I used avg a while ago but now use avira. When I install avira on friends' pc's that have had avg, avira often finds things that avg has missed

  • Sorry to be a pain in the butt, but - can you update Malwarebytes and then run it again.

Also what problems are you getting at the moment?

Hi Loopy!! Long time no sniff!

Hows u? Take it your pc is playing up.

AVG is not as good as it used to be, now that they have a paid for version on the go. Their definitions are usually 6 months old, therefore a recently created virus/trojan malware won't be detected.

A more up-to-date scanner (online) can be found here and another here.

But bear in mind Malwarebytes is full of false positives, so you may have nothing to worry about.

If your pc is still running slow, email me and I will give you some other suggestions to look at.
