Space bar problems

I've recently bought a secondhand laptop which I'mpleased with, except that the space bar keeps missing and needs hitting quite firmly. Is this likely to be something that's easy to fix or have Imajor problems?

Comments

  • There might just be something stuck under it or it might have come out of place slightly. Most laptop keys can be removed and then put back, but you have to be very careful.

Alternatively, you could just fit a new keyboard. This could be hard to obtain if the laptop was only made in limited numbers, but keyboards for some of the most popular older laptops from major manufacturers can be found on eBay at low prices.
  • Carefully remove the keys, shake it out upside down, clean out any debris with a small brush, spray the switches with electrical contact cleaner, wiggle them about, let the cleaner evaporate, replace the keys.

Before you remove any keys first try turning it upside down and tapping on the back. This might remove any rubbish.

An alternative method if you're not lugging it very far is to buy a USB keyboard and plug that in. They're quite cheap.

Never try this with a laptop keyboard. Not if you want them to go back on again!

  • It depends on the laptop - some are a lot better than others when it comes to removing keys. It might be worth Googling to see if somebody has made a guide on removing the keys for your particular model.
