Before you call anyone in to repair it, have a look here

My washing machine handle broke too and I very nearly bought a new machine. But I undid a few screws and got to the handle. I found the part number and ordered it from that website. Cost me £10.20 - much cheaper than a new machine or engineer!
Yes this happened to me too. The new handle just cost me a few quid. It's worth a try to either fix it yourself, or ask a friend or neighbour to help you. Don't be despondent!

the bloody handle on my washing machine broke, so basically the day before i go away (near enough) and i have a load of wet washing stuck in the machine. and worst of all, all i can do is sit and sob over now having to pay someone a fortune to fix it or get a new machine. i knew i was having too good a week for it to last :(
Be inventive! This happened to me & I opened the door on my machine for about 3 years with a spoon before it finally gave up the ghost!! It depends entirely on what sort of machine it is of course, but you never know.

I guess I also mean it's never as bad as it seems, keep smiling :)
