Whats up with my car this week? Broken rev counter and cutting out when I stop?

About a month ago in the snow car seems to stall but then wouldnt start, eventually got it going by keeping foot on accelerator and it was fine once warmed up. Forgot about it.
Happened again this morning and it took a good blast to get it to stop cutting out when I stopped at junctions.
Tonight driving home didn't have to stop so didnt notice if was still doing this. Then noticed my rev counter was on about 45x while doing my normal speed, I never go over 30x revs. Stopped for shopping and then i got even worse, 60x at about 30 miles per hour. When I stopped at home the dial is in the middle of counter, not back at 0.
Are these related or is my poor car falling to bits? And what shall I do to fix it.
Thanks in advance

I would replace the crankshaft sensor
might look like this depending on model...

Thanks, is that for the cutting out? I hate knowing so little! Rev counter even worse today, past the red warning bit - I assume it is just the counter playing up and not my engine going nuts...

the rev counter runs off the signal from the crankshaft sensor
Because your ECU is getting wrong crankshaft sensor readings it may be causing the ECU to do things that are not good for the engine, and hence your engine is cutting out.
It's only a guess, the fault may lie with your dash display unit.0
