Another tax rebate!!

Hi all,
Ive just returned from a short break to find in one of my pay slips that I have been given over £1000 in a tax rebate as part of my wage.
Now, I have been on the Basic Rate tax code since I started my new job 7 months ago and tried (unsucessfully) to have the BR code changed but to no avail.
I now suddenly have all this money and I would like to know what my next step is as far as declaring this to my OR.
The amount (spread over 7 months) would not have taken me over the £99 surplus allowed before an IPA is put into place so im under the assumption that I will be allowed to keep this money as it shouldve been mine to keep anyway.
Is this correct??
I declared BR 6 months ago and am still sending my wage slips to Moonbeever and I also received an ED questionaire 2 months ago so I again assume i am eligible for ED.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
LATL.

I'm not an expert - so please get a second opinion.
But...
As you were effectively "overcharged" by HRMC - the rebate is yours to keep.0 -
Hi,
Yeah I was thinking that I should be able to keep it?
My washing machine is knackered so it would come in handy really but im not holding my hopes up.
Is my best bet to ring my OR and explain or should I write a letter and wait for a response??
Ive got to send my wage slips to Moonbeever anyway so im assuming my OR would be informed anyway??0 -
Probably best to write and explain.
But do point out that the tax refund - was due to overpayment of your tax.
You should have had a NT code - in other words - all the tax should have gone to Moon Beever.
You started your new job one month before you petitioned - and never got a NT code.
So you could hardly pay any tax to Moon Beever.
As the NT code ends on 6th April - they are unlikely to be able to start it.
So it looks like you should be able to keep the refund.0 -
Hi script:
I will draft a letter today and send it off. In the mean-time, I might give my OR a ring as she is very helpful and understanding.
As I said, Moonbeever have REALLY dragged their heels with my case, I have been sending them my weekly wage slips for 4 months now and they still havent got the NT code sorted.
Maybe they had difficulties implementing the NT code due to my BR tax code???
I hope I get to keep it as it would really come in handy at the moment!!0 -
Well I rang my OR earlier on and she said that its a tricky one because they should really take any tax rebates straight away BUT, because it is the fault of the HMRC (being on a BR tax code), I may get to keep most if not all of the repayment.
I explained that the increase in wage would not take me over the £100 surplus allowed either. She said she would have to speak to her superior about it but he was in a meeting so I will probably get an answer tomorrow???0 -
Providing they understand that it was for an overpayment of tax...
I bet you get to keep it.0 -
I wish I shared your confidence script!!:D
I did stress (quite a few times) that it was an overpayment so I think she got the message!!!
Oh, an update on the NT code.
I had to ring the Inland Revenue in the end, they said they had never reveived any notification of my BR and they will look into it.:eek:0 -
Hi
I was in the same position this tax year 4 months into br, although my rebate was only £250 as I only worked 1 day per week.
I begged for the £250 back and explained that I only earnt £50 a week so shouldn't have paid any tax let alone BR but they wouldn't let me have it back at all.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.
wins - peroni bottle opener, peroni bowl, peroni coastersx2 and a vodkat cocktail kit,
would love to win something 'proper'!!0 -
Damn, sorry to hear that...
How did they get it back/
From you...
Or did HMRC pay it direct to the OR?0 -
Well I havent heard back from my OR about the possibility of keeping the tax overpayment.
I will just leave it in my account and just wait.
No news is good news huh???0
